I think Hillary Clinton's full Quote from her Friday night fundraiser helps her. It shows that she realizes that the bad people among Donald Trump's supporters do not represent America. It also shows that she realizes there are problems within the United States that have to be solved. Finally, it shows that she has compassion for those individuals who are struggling.
There is a part of me that thinks the full quote should be made into a campaign ad. However, I do worry that if the full quote was turned into a campaign ad some people would be angered by the first part of the quote and not worry about the second part of the quote. However, the second part of the quote is great. It explains at least some of what is going on in America and I think it could really get some additional people to vote for Hillary Clinton.
You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic -- you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people -- now 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks -- they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America."
"But the other basket -- and I know this because I see friends from all over America here -- I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas -- as well as, you know, New York and California -- but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they're just desperate for change. It doesn't really even matter where it comes from. They don't buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won't wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they're in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well."

(1,689 posts)it was not a well thought out thing to say. It just serves to fire up Trump's base.

(11,607 posts)I actually think it was smart. Anyone offended by it wasn't voting for her anyway. Everyone else knows she is right.

(37,748 posts)Anything fires up Trump's base. She could sip a cup of coffee and the half-wits and dullards would get fired up and outraged over it.
It served her well, and it serves her campaign well.

(58,785 posts)extremely carefully thought out. HRC and her advisers may have spent weeks before deciding as the time arrived that "basket of deplorables" would best strike the note they wanted. And success!! It immediately became a meme, repeated everywhere, and the subject of untold number of discussions that will continue right up through election day.
And, of course, Trump's fired-up base burns a little hotter. That's fine.
Because it's focused the attention of the nation on them. Not on all conservatives, on Trump's deplorables.
Trump's economic supporters who just want "change" have been given recognition of what they genuinely care about, recognition that they are not bigots, and recognition that they do not belong with these others.
Wobblers will find it harder to wobble to Trump with the spotlight on the deplorables.
And also, in our party, HRC has pleased the many millions they've behaved deplorably toward by denouncing those in that basket of deplorables. We really need to, after all.
Good job, Our Guys!

(2,495 posts)She had said something similar in an interview on Israeli TV a couple days earlier. Also coincided with a new TV ad that starts off with Senator Lindsey Graham calling Trump a race baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot, and a new ad from Priorities USA (who she's not supposed to coordinate with wink wink) contrasting Reagan with Trump rhetoric and Trump supporters attacking protesters.

(58,785 posts)and "Mexican rapists" and some Republican governor HIMSELF saying it's about "the deplorables" and those he refers to as Trump's "dupes" needing pity, apparently the other half, as he tries to attack Hillary for supposedly insulting them all.
At the bottom of the screen is "Pence on whether Duke is "deplorable": "I'm not in the name-calling business."
LOL.

(63,224 posts)It was a brilliant move, because it forces Trump's campaign either to own or to reject their deplorable base, and they can be explicitly called out for it. Witness Pence's response when asked about David Duke, for instance.
Clinton's "deplorables" comment was brilliant and well planned.

(13,390 posts)It makes it worse, actually. Separating out different groups - real Americans and those who are deplorable is extremely ugly rhetoric. It's exactly the same rhetorical MO as nationalistic politicians just with different tar
As far as I'm concerned. Republicans can have nationalistic and hyperpatriotic rhetoric all to themselves.

(37,748 posts)I think so. It makes it easier, actually. It allows one to better see the difference between the chaff and wheat of the GOP base. I didn't infer, nor did I see implied a reference to "real" Americans, merely contrasting the differences between Trump's two largest blocs.

(13,390 posts)And as would follow she goes on to tell us what is in the other basket.
It is an authoritarian "I know who the good Americans are" framework. Slicing and dicing and placing worthy vs unworthy people in different baskets is what Trump has been doing in the worst republican traditions. As far as I'm concerned republicans can have that mindset to themselves.

(47,209 posts)She didn't randomly call some people "unworthy"- that was Donald. Interesting you left out her very specific definition of who is delorable. Sympathy for those Devils?

(13,390 posts)The tactic of calling the targets of hate roaches as a way of turning people against their own citizens is no different from using the deplorable for the same purpose. No matter the target the agenda is "let's you and him fight on my behalf."
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Honestly there are lots of people with blinders on at those rallies and there is finally a national conversation about what is going on. No one has "to fight" these people, they only have to decide if they want to continue to stand next to those assholes. And to support Teumps divisive rhetoric.
Hillary finally called it, and I'm very proud. It means a lot to women and POC.

(13,390 posts)Carving out groups dilutes the message. Targeting rhetoric rather than people carries more meaning, anyway.

Anything that makes that thin skinned man child lose his cool is a good thing. Besides, sensible people agree with it.
