Hillary should refine her "deplorable" comment.

She should make it more specific. She should make it about one person, Donald Trump. He has a long history of racism in his family. He is a sexist that has called women "fat pigs". He is xenophobic when he paints Mexicans as rapists and wants to ban all Muslims from this country.

Donald Trump is deplorable. Hillary should double-down on that comment, in my opinion. His viewpoints are getting a lot of support. To his supporters, if the shoe fits, wear it.

1. I think she chose the term specifically and very well

Trump's campaign can now be asked directly "Is this racist supporter deplorable? Is this antisemitic supporter deplorable? Is that misogynistic supporter deplorable?" Clinton put them in a position of having to defend their worst supporters, and she correctly pointed out just how terrible so many of his supporters are.

Witness Pence trying to figure out how to respond when asked about Duke, for example.

She is running against Donald Trump. That is where the focus should be, in my opinion.

I think that it's fair to remind potential Trump voters that (at least) half of his supporters are terrible, terrible people.

3. That wouldn't be "refining"

That would be totally changing it. Yes, Trump is deplorable, repulsive, obnoxious, racist, xenophobic, etc., etc. But her comment was about the potential voters who are supporting him. It was an insult to the American citizens who support him. I think it was a mistake, and it could possibly turn some undecideds off. JMHO

The only thing she can accomplish, in regards to Trump supporters, is to try and make them aware of just who they are supporting? You cannot ask people to vote against themselves. But, she should point out that people who support racism, sexism, and xenophobia are deplorable. That does not let them off the hook. However, if you chop off the head, the snake will die.

8. Do you believe that they don't know who they're supporting?

she should point out that people who support racism, sexism, and xenophobia are deplorable.
Many of his voters have held their racist, sexist, xenophobic views for decades, and they aren't about to reach an epiphany simply because Clinton calls them out for it. They'll either continue to believe that racism, sexism & xenophobia are fine, or else that they're not being racist, sexist & xenophobic. And they'll likely become even more entrenched as a result.

However, if you chop off the head, the snake will die.
This snake was thriving long before Trump declared his candidacy, and it will persist long after he's an electoral footnote.
