How has this man survived as a businessman for so many years? He is an absolute disaster and now no one wants to work with or for him.

(11,175 posts)According to the linked article, Trump signed contracts with two celebrity chefs to open restaurants in the hotel -- contracts that were "quite lucrative for Trump." Then the restaurateurs "backed out" of the contracts. Trump has sued them, and on that very brief statement of the facts, it certainly seems that Trump has a good case.

(36,827 posts)The restaurant business operates largely on the backs of immigrants and especially at the high end you must have the respect of your employees. Not many are going to want to work for an unapologetic racist and xenophobe.

(11,175 posts)Now, IF they took note that Trump has a history of making outlandish public statements (even before his current campaign), and IF they thought about the respect factor that you identify, THEN it would have made sense for them to protect themselves. They could win the lawsuits if, in six-point type on page 47, the contract says that the restaurateur can terminate the contract if the landlord (presumably The Trump Organization) or any of its executives does anything to impair the image of the contractor, or the like.
Absent such a provision in the contract, they could argue that it's implied, but that's always a tough row to hoe.
That one party to a contract starts insulting immigrants or otherwise acting like a complete dipshit is generally not relevant to interpreting the contractual obligations.
