http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/09/politics/hillary-clinton-donald-trump-basket-of-deplorables/index.htmlBut the problem is that it is actually true. The people at his rallies are a bunch of hateful birthers. They constantly chant "lock her up". They like when trump says hateful things. But now the media will focus on this and kill her for it. The way they are going to focus on this, I wish they would focus on all the hateful things Trump actually says and tweets.

(4,302 posts)He has huge support among white supremacists and other ugly factions of the electorate. He can't disavow them because it's true, and she's absolutely right. She should bring this up every chance she gets to reveal his base for what it is.

(4,167 posts)A bunch of hateful racists. But the media and the Republicans are going to spin her words. They are going to say that she is putting down millions of hardworking Americans
The way that she worded it will get twisted.

(4,302 posts)but the fringe nut jobs like Breitbart will, and Trump will too. And his supporters will eat it up. But she wasn't going to win them over anyway, so she might as well hold them up as a snapshot of the kind of people who support him as a divisive wedge between them and the undecided voter.
And there are a lot of undecided voters right now.

She's right. They are deplorable. Racist, sexist, xenophobic.
They followed with Trumps statement about her "getting away with shooting blah blah"
For whatever it's worth - that man's supporters hate my guts and she just called them out on it.
Trump supporters are not going to vote for her this close to the election. If that hurt their feelings - fuck them.
complain jane
(4,302 posts)at least online, it backs people into a corner when they are called out on their sexism. They respond that they aren't sexist at all, they hate her because of ____________ and _______________ etc. Which turns out to be tinfoil-hat nuttery, and then the fun begins in taking apart their lunacy and exposing it for what it is. Sexism.

(31,888 posts)I'm going to go out on a limb -
It's okay to be an awful American.
It's also okay for me to call them out. And for HRC to do so as well.
I'm blind this election due in part to what a vile human being Trump is.
So HRC can say whatever she wants and I will support her.

(39,379 posts)Directly insulting your opponent's supporters is not the way to go. Trump brings out the worst in people. Start there. Basket of deplorables? Now she has to explain why she still wants to be their President, too.

(59,504 posts)But where does this put a Trump supporter's sister, wife, friend etc who is uncertain about Trump for all the reasons anyone could list. Here, she is not speaking of Trump she, not someone supporting her on the Internet or even someone associated with her campaign, is attacking that person's loved one. I don't get why she did not just say accurately that they were completely unwinnable ... even if she were the only candidate.
Think back, even the loathsome Bush and Cheney never said SUPPORTERS of Senator Kerry were deplorables or anything similar ... in fact, they left it to people they had a distance from to call Kerry very negative things.
This is HRC sinking to Trump's level in the heat of a very nasty campaign. While understandable, this is beneath her. I hope she personally already regrets this and will apologize for it. Note that even with all the garbage thrown at our last two nominees and their wives, I seriously can not see either saying anything remotely like this.
Remember HRC needs to improve her likability, this doesn't do it.
Proud liberal 80

(4,302 posts)I had been sitting around whining that I couldn't get the campaign to respond to my inquiries about how to help. Then it dawned on me that simply talking to people is the biggest help there is. I can't believe how much good it does, and how many people simply listen to their ill-informed friends' misinformation. Pressing them on why they support Trump and supplying reputable sources for pro-Clinton information when they realize they can't explain their support for him (or disdain for her) has done so much.

(59,504 posts)The few I know are living in communities where many will. I will not bring this comment up to them as I have bright some of the worst Trump ones. If it becomes an issue, I will suggest it was said in the heat of a nasty campaign and she is human.
We need to win people, who reject Trump because he is odious. Many are people who were or are Republican and already had a negative opinion of HRC. ( one was hoping that if, heaven forbid, Trump became the nominee, we elected Bernie. She actually said she could vote for him against Trump. Getting her to HRC is harder. This doesn't help.)
I can not defend it. If I did, I think I lose all credibility and will lose whatever possible influence I have.

(59,504 posts)This may hurt because it will be seen as thinking almost a fourth of the country is deplorable. Talk about us vs them and then taking it a step further.
I bet it further hurts likability and is possibly redefined as elitist or entitlement as some define it as classist.
Needless to say Trump says worse things every day and, unlike her, is not remotely close to being fit to be President. I can imagine it is really hard being essentially on tape 24/7, but this is really not good, even if I am wrong and there is no political cost.

It's been reported already that he has retweeted white supremacists, pretended to be unfamiliar with David Duke as a ploy to not have to disavow them and he has nuts for supporters. (50,986 posts)favor. Trump's demographic is significantly made up of folks who behave deplorably, who shout "Build the Wall" and "Lock Her Up" at Trump rallies -- at the deliberate prompting of their candidate.
Those foot-stomping fools were not going to vote for Hillary Clinton in the first place. But by suggesting they be placed in a basket for behaving deplorably, she allowed herself the moral high ground. Trump foot-stompers do not exhibit acceptable adult behavior. She's right on points alone but may have set into motion an awareness that he is leading an angry mob of brainless hotheads.
The favor part may come in increased voter turnout by those in the many demographic voting groups Trump has alienated. Hillary can make this argument anyplace she steps off a plane now. And her campaign has ample footage to run ads to back her up. If Trump supporters cannot justify their conduct, they own 'deplorable.'

(3,284 posts)the people who will raise the biggest stink about this (Trump's racist, sexist, islamophobic, and homophobic supporters) are the ones who always accuse liberals of being "too P.C." Biggest bunch of hypocrites I've ever seen.
What I've learned from this election is that it's ok to call someone horrible names if they're not white (Mexicans are "rapists", Muslims are "terrorists", and you have to treat women like "shit"), but it's really crossing the line to identify someone as racist, misogynist or a xenophobe. I guess it's only ok to call someone a slur if they're not white.

(1,382 posts)He owes the American electorate a huge apology for even being in the race, and pulling it down to such a deplorable level, but that doesn't mean the other candidate needs to sink to that level with him!
This whole election is an embarrassment. When do we actually talk policies? Why are the major candidates (and now that includes both of them) acting like middle school bullies to people that don't agree with them?
What has our society come to? I don't think it is bad to point out deplorable comments, and I won't be a cheerleader for such behavior, no matter who does it!!
Once again, rightly or wrongly, she just insulted 25% of the electorate. That is just wrong.

(50,986 posts)an insult. It's better journalism than the mainstream media, for one thing.
She spoke as a calculated risk that her words would create a characterization of the Trump campaign by defining its supporters. I think that's a strategic move in an election where the Republican ticket is comprised of two deeply bigoted men.

(1,382 posts)Peace!
And it goes without saying, that this will not change my vote anyway, so I don't probably shouldn't worry about it anyway.
Honestly, I am just sick of this election that has not once centered on policy, and I think that both candidates are sinking to a level that will change the American landscape forever, and I hate it.
All I wish for, is two adults debating real issues that effect the American populace.
When I think back to how unified we all were 15 years ago, and see the discord that has devolved since that time I hate it.
We are all Americans, and in November we will elect ONE President, for all of us, and I think personal attacks should be left up to surrogates, and not the one that will be the next Leader of the Free World.
She is going to be that person, and so far she has acted like it, I just disagree with this new tone, and I hope she gets away from it ASAP!

As some analysts have said, moderate Republicans who do not want to see themselves as racists or general morons might vote for this Trump 2.0 version. Neither one had trump as their top 5 choices and had misgivings about him but really bought the crooked Hillary spin until she started bringing up the alt right. I helped a little by showing them a few sites and they really had no idea the Klan was really backing trump, they watch fox and hadn't heard that this wasn't just some rogue racist but large swaths of racists.
