This is strong enough to crack foundations and knock brick chimneys down, not to mention rearrange kitchens near the epicenter.

Quakes don't have to be that strong to do damage if they're shallow and close.

Also, definitely bolting anything over beds and couches to the walls.

Just seems a good time for a supplement to a 5.6-5.8 incentive. Hope all are well.

This article is sobering.

Why our legislature here in Michigan would allow fracking and deep injection wells to happen right on top of one of the largest sources of fresh water on Earth, is beyond me.

that's included in that article.

It's hard for me to understand how US and MI let pipelines run -on the surface- of the Michigan lake bottom, and now they want to run that abbrasive stuff from up north through them.

I suppose -the plan-, wherein nothing goes wrong, looks good on paper.

That number has risen to 2 earthquakes per DAY.

The likelihood of this morning's earthquake being linked to human activity has got to be close to 100%. Scary stuff!

Damage reports coming as far away as SW OKC. Feel for those people in and around Pawnee. Some significant damage already reported to homes and buildings.

no one was seriously hurt. I remember back in August 2011, while with our son at his school, there was an earthquake somewhere in Virginia. The floor moved back and forth. It felt like we were in a trailer. At that time we lived in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

I'm in IT and a very secure building. Somehow someone had missed writing rules on what to do in an earthquake. We all just kinda sat at our desks and looked at eachother weighing what to do. It's a cement and brick building with only a few main support areas. All open cubbies and only 2 stairwells - not enough safe space for 160 people. We decided if it ever happened again, we'd assemble in the parking lot away from the building just in case things collapsed.

Freaked out the birds and at least one chihuahua...and me. This one shook for awhile and was pretty damn big, at least for us.

(Nancy, USAA does have earthquake insurance and it is pretty reasonable, at least when I got. To my knowledge they are still allowing for coverage in OK.)
