Obama Commutes Sentences of 111 Federal Inmates

By BENJAMIN SIEGEL - Aug 30, 2016, 3:59 PM ET

President Obama has commuted the sentences of 111 federal inmates convicted of drug offenses, the White House announced today, bringing his total number of commutations to 673.

According to the White House, Obama has cut the federal sentences of more men and woman than the last 10 presidents combined, and the most since President Calvin Coolidge. Earlier this month, he commuted the sentences of 214 people in a single day -- a new record.

Republicans have criticized Obama's actions. In a July 2015 letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee accused him of using the "extraordinary" action for "political purposes."

Obama has pardoned just 70 individuals as president, according to the Justice Department, fewer than any president since William McKinley.

LSD seller who was facing life.

Timothy L. Tyler – St. Petersburg, FL
Offense: Possession with intent to deliver LSD; conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute LSD; Middle District of Florida
Sentence: Life imprisonment (July 19, 1994)

Commutation Grant: Prison sentence commuted to expire on August 30, 2018, conditioned upon enrollment in residential drug treatment.

I will always remember John Ehrlichman who said "we created the war on drugs to target black people and the anti war left". Then created (with help of Democratic Congress persons, especially Joe biden) mandatory minimum sentencing to increase penalties.

Let's hope that Obama is brave enough to do this. I would think this would be done after the election and at the very end of his term.

I'm not going to debate the case here, but enough is enough, he's old and has suffered long enough.

8yrs ago I used to think "If he can get elected again - what will he do before the end of his 2nd election?". I always felt that Obama walks a tight rope - he's conducted himself as a sensible centrist Democrat who realized the best he can hope for is modest improvements (Obamacare vs. Single Payer etc.).

Now I think we're seeing who really is. I hope to God this man doesn't just go away after the presidency. There's so much good he can do even outside the Whitehouse.

Conservatives are so big on wasteful government spending. Why keep people in prison for such a long time on such non violent crimes.

Behind a voice over of "Obama releasing felons..." they are showing photos of huge forearms covered with gangland style tattoos without explaining that these commutes are a response to the out of balance Federal sentencing guidelines for drugs that date back 3 administrations.

If we really want them to freak out someone should start an online rumor that Obama's secret black army training in Florida has personnel shortages that need to be filled before the 2016 election. Cue Alex Jones the black helicopters!!!i
