VIDEO: Cop cruelly blasts 84-year-old black woman in the face with pepper spray in her own home
The Muskogee police department in Oklahoma has released video of a police officer using pepper spray on an elderly woman.
Body-cam video of the incident shows an officer using chemical irritant on 84-year-old Geneva Smith last week in her house. The video was given to local news outlet FOX23 this week.
Officers were following the womans 56-year-old son, Arthur Paul Blackmon, for running a stop sign. Blackmon led police back to his mothers house and entered, refusing police commands to stop.
An officer kicked in the door and entered the house, and shot Blackmon with an electrical stun gun while he had his hands raised.
Six other officers entered the residence, and Smith emerged from a room before being ordered to turn around. About 40 seconds later, an officer uses pepper spray on her.

(37,549 posts)a loose cannon like that around them is bad news.
Six cops.....and not one had the command authority to talk to an 84 year old woman, calm her down, and behave in her home. Not one. Cowards.

Big deal if the stop sign runner escaped. They have his address.

(65,616 posts)We just have to remember that although most cops are good folks, there are some real ASSHOLES on the force that like to make others miserable.
They need to be weeded out ASAP.

(29,798 posts)Their personnel recruitment tools allow them to select for the qualities they want. They are deliberately selecting for lack of empathy and willingness to place group loyalty above all else.

(14,858 posts)most of the assholes would already have been weeded out. The good folks would be taking care of the problem. They aren't.

(2,902 posts)Of course my Internet connection is so slow that I'm seeing about one frame every ten seconds and the video and audio were skipping, so I could be wrong but that isn't what it looked like to me.
Plus, this situation was probably even worse than reported because keep in mind that this is from Fox.

(49,002 posts)They really do need to "find another line of work" or go through double time training in "community policing".
Too many officers think they are there to lay down the law rather than serve the community.

(47,496 posts)MORE cops. So many videos that we've seen have shown an excessive amount of police for even the most minor infractions. The number of cops that showed up in New York for the illegal sale of loose cigarettes comes to mind. What the hell!

(49,002 posts)The Judicial system lays down the law.
Police are not judge, jury, and executioner as they so often act when they lay down the law.
Serving the community would be to not apply 7 cops to chase one black guy simply because he ran a stop sign.

(4,305 posts)I wonder if it might have been unconstitutional? The right to be secure in their own homes, etc. This lady was assaulted and injured in her own home suddenly through no fault of her own.

(4,305 posts)Why didn't they have to get a warrant? I remember watching a movie made just before the Second World War. In this movie, a Nazi spy jeers at the United States because the American police have refused to force entry into a home because of constitutional rights. "Even a child can refuse to give them entry; how weak!" Later in this movie, the wisdom of the Constitution is shown as the Nazi spy's arrogance proves to be his undoing, and it is suggested that this arrogance will prove to be the undoing of the German Third Reich. Now, arrogance and American Exceptionalism are prized by the Right Wingers. In a high school where I worked, a poster on the wall exhorted the students that pride was a great quality that caused people to win and succeed and become Number One. When I was a girl, we were taught the Bible verse (Proverbs, I believe) that says, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."
If we truly uphold the Constitution, even a child or even an 84 year old lady have Constitutional rights.

(47,496 posts)is something we see brought up often in cop dramas. It is practically a cliche, where a cop has to pretend he hears someone in distress inside as an excuse to forcefully enter a residence. It doesn't sound like the cops in this case even hesitated. All this over a traffic violation? Perhaps the same rules don't apply in a minority neighborhood.

(224 posts)If the guy was only guilty of running a stop sign and then refused to stop and went home, just get a warrant. I am pretty sure they could have retrieved the necessary information to get the warrant. Instead they had to kick open a door and assault an 84 year old woman. So stupid and unnecessary. Cops always seem to be on roid rage, and just go blinding mad, instead of doing what they are supposed to do and that it deescalate the situation.
