Besides, they were saying 'mean things' about him (i.e. quoting his exact words), and he's so thin-skinned that he just HAS to be snarky in response. This will also garner him a massive amount of free exposure, which his hardcore supporters will turn a blind eye to and dismiss as just another example of liberal media bias.
