If Donald Trump is the President?
We always hear a few celebrities say that if so-and-so wins the next election, they will leave the country. It happens almost every election.
If you were to move to another country, where would you go? Canada? Mexico? Costa Rica? New Zealand?
Or would you stay in place and fight to defend America?

(34,195 posts)I recently read an article on this, and unless you have a lot of money or a job that is desperately needed, most countries do not want us to move there and they make it very hard to do so.
That includes places like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
I did have my opportunity in the early 1970s. During my 'hippie years' I lived/worked in Canada for about 7 months and could have stayed, but got homesick for the USA.

(34,195 posts)Twenty years ago I worked with a guy who had a house in the Philippines.
This was in San Diego. He was an American, married to a Filipina (?) and they lived six months here and six months there.
For some reason I no longer recall I felt that was how he had to do it.
I also met a guy more recently who lives in Mexico six months, but has to come back here for six months.
I have no clue why, or if this is still the way it is.

(67,808 posts)It is mine for the applying by accident of the way my grandfather got his naturalization and the year of my birth. My brother is four years younger and doesn't qualify. I looked into this in the 60s but volunteered for the navy instead of fleeing. I looked again when W took office but chose to stay and fight. These days I think about the Amalfi peninsula. And Drumpf.
At my age I am too cranky to not stay and fight as I'm able
Fuck you Drumpfie.

(3,477 posts)I lived there off and on for the past 12 years and it would be no problem for me to live there more or less permanently. But, I'm an American country boy at heart and always return to my roots.

Really, I would retire over there if I could afford to (and have felt that way for more than a decade), but not just because a large portion of my fellow citizens are fool enough to vote for Dubya and now Drumpf. All countries have fools; America is just the only super power and that lets the idgits think they can run the world.
