I have seen some posts here and on the Internet, about Republicans dropping tRump but this is, at this point in the general election, impossible.
GOP rules to remove him against his will is in a gray area and likely would require another special convention and a committee would have to pick a new candidate.
More importantly, the deadline to be on the Ohio ballot has passed. Ohio does not allow substitute listings (even though it's trump you are really voting for Putin as an example), votes are only counted for the actual candidate's name that appears on the ballot.
Florida is September 1st. They also do not allow substitute names. Votes are only counted for the actual candidate's name that appears on the ballot.
Then there is the will of the batshitpublicans that voted for this dumpster fire. tRump got more votes in a republican presidential primary than any republican presidential candidate in history. They love this guy.
So, no, there is, for all practical intent and purpose, no way to drop tRump and run another candidate. They are stuck with this asshole till November and their choice of candidates may well ensure Democratic Party dominance in politics for a long time

We give no ground. Assume nothing. Get out the vote like our life depended on it. Earn every single vote we can till the polls close in every state. Losing is not an option.

(5,737 posts)That bunch just doesn't want to publicly acknowledge that they think like him, but in a secret ballot? Damn right they will.

(1,395 posts)We all have to vote.
I agree that there are a lot of embarrassed republicans out there that won't admit it, but will get into that booth and vote for him anyway.

(23,105 posts)My boss has a Masters degree and her husband is a Chief of Surgery and their whole family is voting for drumpf. She thinks hes not that bad and HRC is worse. She's not a racist but is obviously brainwashed and has signed on for the murder of our democracy and doesn't have a clue. She only watches faux so doesn't hear the worst about him and assumes the hrc news is truth, rather than total lies, We can't take anything for granted, must work hard and GOTV. Frankenstein can't win!!!!!!!!

(10,437 posts)....really no end how bad this plays out for trump as the DNC has to nationalize all the LOCAL/STATE elections to be about trump.....his russian connections, tax returns...etc

(11,087 posts)Maybe the media. Maybe the Republican party establishment. If they offend his precious sense of honor, by saying one mean (or true) thing about him, he might say, "I'm not going to stand for party sad lack of support. I no longer consider myself a Republican. So I hereby suspend my campaign. #BadDayForAmerica." (You know he would announce this via Twitter.)
Then what can the Republicans do? After the celebration, I mean.
Seriously, they might call special sessions of state legislatures they control to allow late ballot changes. They might get Rubio on the ballot in a handful of states that way. Late ballot changes would likely face legal challenges. I understand absentee voting is already under way in some states.

(601 posts)They can't dump that idiot although it's clear they want to. But as many have said, they (and Faux News, and Rush and all those lying assholes) created this monster. Now they are stuck with him. I'm interested in what happens after Hill destroys him in November. The repub party will be in tatters (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!) I think it's very possible that they will split into 2 parties afterwards - the non-thinkers and the extremely stupid angry wackjobs.
Oh schadenfreud is truly delicious.

(5,902 posts)As far as they're concerned, the only question left to settle is to whether the "lone nut" will be Muslim or Mexican.

(8,254 posts)the only Q remaining is if they want to have a GOP still around in 2020

(23,105 posts)They would lose power and definitely would lose the Senate and SCOTUS. They are stuck with this monster version of themselves. They created the glorification of power and wealth and downgrading of knowledge and intelligence and caring that allowed this wound to fester. Unfortunately, they got more than they wanted, They didn't want to give Russia the world and destroy Nato, but thats what they got, someone deep in debt to that country and willing to make a deal to benefit himself, at the peril of the world. He's so totally ignorant, he actually wants to use nukes against his perceived enemies. R's got a total fraud, not just economically but one who cannot tell the truth, who changes his stories daily and denies his past statements. He's a COMPLETE fraud/liar/cheat. He's using campaign money on his family and businesses and isn't using it to run a campaign. He steals from everyone with no regrets.

(5,995 posts)He clearly loaned his campaign money and staged many of their biggest events in his own hotels/properties. He doesn't want to run ads so the money will go to repay the loans first and all the events were likely billed at full price.

(35,699 posts)This is the only out that I see for the GOP. The electors in states where Trump wins would vote for someone else. This would likely drag the SCOTUS into the election though, as there is no way the Democrats would stand for such a result.

(8,700 posts)Members of the electoral college are not legally bound to vote with their respective state's popular vote by the Constitution or federal law. Many states do have laws to compel the chosen electors to vote with their state's popular vote and/or their is a Party pledge they must sign.
There has never been a challenge to the Constitutionality of these laws or pledges brought before the USSC so it's impossible to say if it would be found Constitutional or not as the Constitution does not bind an elector to their state's popular vote.
While this is an interesting possibility, it would likely subject the elector to some sort of criminal charges and I could not find a record or story of it ever happening. More importantly, it would require coordination and a unified decision to vote a different way, the definition of a criminal conspiracy, since the act is a crime in most states.
yellowcanine
(35,699 posts)But none made a difference. If we ever ended up in a 269-269 tie it would be pins and needles time. It is one of the reasons we should get rid of the system imo and go to a direct popular vote. The argument against it is that candidates would only focus on the larger states. But that is incorrect in my view. With a direct popular vote candidates would have an incentive to turn out as many of their supporters as possible in all 50 states. Every vote would count the same. And in a close election the election could not be called until the west coast voted - so there would be incentive for voters to cast their ballots in those states as they could still affect the outcome.
angrychair
(8,700 posts)First, it does significantly reduce the influence of low population states.
More importantly, I think with direct, raw popular vote count, it truly makes it about name recognition, money and popularity than it is now. It would be an even more entrenched, insiders-only club. A national popular vote would be a very high bar for a lot of people.
Plus, are talking popular vote of total population or only registered voters?

(35,699 posts)An national ID card with the person's name, birthdate, photo and current address would be issued without charge and updated as needed without charge. An electronic chip in the card would have ID verification technology. (facial recognition, etc.)
Jim Beard
(2,535 posts)to that but I think that now, people would be more willing to accept it.
yellowcanine
(35,699 posts)And of course the national ID would be a sore point with the militia types.

(6,395 posts)They've gone past the point of no return.
If they dump him, the bat-shit-crazy voters will stay home. Almost guaranteeing a larger loss than if he sticks it out.
And Trump already has the perfect excuse if he doesn't win. The establishment tipped their hand by not supporting him so he can chalk up the loss to that.
The GOP actually wants him to quit as it will not harm (as much) the down ticket. They've already conceded presidency. Hence why the meme of him "quitting" is getting pushed out there.
