Mercury News just majorly messed up by replacing the first gold-winning Black woman swimmer Simone Manuel’s name with “African-American”. They later apologized for not using her name (”We apologize for an insensitive headline earlier on a story about Simone Manuel and Michael Phelps’ medal wins.”) and changed the headline to “Stanford’s Simone Manuel shares historic night with Michael Phelps” still putting Simone’s historic win in the same article with Michael Phelps as if she doesn’t deserve her own story.
