I'm not ready for another dog, I kept telling myself, after losing my beloved yellow lab to oral melanoma several months before. But one day I decided to browse Petfinder and I fell in love with a sad basset hound who looked like her world was shattered. Of all the pages and pages of adorable dogs, Jill stood out. I knew nothing about basset hounds, but I instantly fell in love. I forwarded her picture to a few friends and family and they urged me to adopt her. At 91 pounds,it was not going to be easy for her to find a new home. She was lucky, though, her previous owner loved her and spoiled her, but she was an older woman with medical issues and could no longer care for her. So Ms. Jill was about to lose the only family she knew. Thank you to Tri-State Basset Rescue, they encouraged me to adopt her and even helped me with advice on helping her shed the pounds. A lot has changed in the three years I've had her - her name had to be changed slightly as MY name is also Jill. Since I had the name first, hers was changed to Jilly. She is also a happy svelte dog at 54 pounds. She loves to sleep on her bed, sleep in the sun, sleep on her food dish and sleep. anywhere she can (see a trend?) And she even has a little (BIG) basset brother named Dudley who is just as loved and spoiled as she is. Please, adopt these rescue and shelter dogs. They have so much love to give. And thank you to Tri-State Basset Rescue for finding me TWO wonderful furry children!

(6,592 posts)When we are ready for another dog (we like to have at least two or three), it will be a senior, as we'd prefer they don't outlive us.

(4,033 posts)He was fine one day and gone the next. We were shattered, particularly since we were 2500 miles from home. (We had our dogs with us. They go where we go.) The drive home was particularly brutal, since we had left home with three dogs and were coming home with two. The house didn't seem right with only two dogs. This happened in late October. We agreed that after the holidays we would look for another dog.
One night I was browsing PetFinder I saw a picture of a Cavalier puppy that I instantly fell in love with. The next morning I slept in. When I came stumbling out from the bedroom, my wife was already on her computer and couldn't wait to show me a picture of a puppy she had found.
It was the same puppy!! The very next day, Bennie came home with us. Aside from being a Cavalier, he was very different from Sancho, but somehow he filled the empty place in our home. We didn't get him to be another Sancho, but he was the right dog so succeed him.
We have since become volunteers with Cavalier Rescue. Rescue dogs are the best!
Bless you for taking Jilly. Don't shop, adopt.

(41,991 posts)But he's still wagging his tail and eating, mostly, and he's still Mr. Bear's good boy.
Merrily is 12 and going pretty strong.

(4,033 posts)He's slowed down a bit, doesn't see or hear as well as he used to, but like your Tucker, his tail rarely stops wagging. Anybody that says they aren't family just doesn't understand.

(7,581 posts)The first 5 years, I brought up about 3000 dogs and puppies from high kill southern shelters - and 99% of them were amazing dogs! A few were naughty, and only one was really bad.
You can't go wrong with a rescue dog. They're eternally grateful.
