It is almost non-existent. The vast majority of people do not get their news from newspapers or news magazines. Most news sources are only echo chambers of each other. If one is talking about emails, then almost all of them are talking about emails.
In reality, most people get their information (news) from the television and radio media. The corporate media, most of television, is in the business for ratings, not informing the citizens.
There are now two separate entities of the corporate media. One was created to offer opposing political opinions to the mainstream media. That is why FOX was created. They had no reporters on the ground when they began their venture. They are not concerned with facts or the interests of the nation as a whole, but mostly, an opposing political viewpoint, i.e. FOX and right-wing talk radio. They represent about half of the total media.
The other half of the corporate media would include CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, and other cable outlets. Even if they attempt to inform the public, it is not possible for them to do so. For example, if they wanted to inform the public about violent threats by a candidate running for the Presidency, the political entity of the corporate media would create a story about emails or Benghazi or something else to dilute the story and to relegate it to nothing more than fair and balanced.
The citizens are left where they began. They are left confused and uninformed. They have no where to go except their political Party for guidance.
It is a dangerous game that is played by these political propagandists. An uninformed populace cannot make wise decisions about the direction of our democracy. At the best, they are opportunists. At the worst, they are enemies of the state.

(46,179 posts)That's why I quit getting my news from them.
I don't turn them on. I don't give them ratings. If most people would quit watching them, and quit talking about them, and start working on enabling a free, rather than a corporate, press, the country would be in better shape.
Unfortunately, people crave hearing and watching people who either reinforce their opinions, or give them someone to get mad at and blame, so they keep turning them on.

(10,030 posts)The sheer idiocy of Fox News etc. is amazing.
The recent constant references to the Orlando shooter's father in the audience are presented as if the Clinton Campaign deliberately placed him there. Why in the world would they do something so dumb????
They don't even make basic sense.
