They know they are in for some serious down ballot losses, because have the most ignorant candidate to ever run for the Presidency. However they have been courting those nutcases who voted for him for decades

(4,153 posts)I think of GWB stealing the WH. . . . I think of ALL the gross and inept attempts to destroy the Affordable Care Act. . .
I don't feel even a tingle of pity for them. They deserve it and much, much, much worse.

(4,673 posts)for intelligent individuals in the Republican Party. I know a few of those.
If the Democratic Party went totally off the rails, leaving me completely homeless, I'd feel badly for me too.

(58,785 posts)Democratic Party. Not this bad. We wouldn't nominate a Trump, no matter how he appealed to one bloc or another.
Liberals especially are less communal and less conforming than conservatives. We're more likely to be repelled than attracted to authoritarian figures and not nearly so prone to dutifully coloring within lines drawn for us by others. There are limits to our loyalty. We're not wonderfully honest with ourselves, but compared to conservatives we are definitely more likely to check facts and ditch the liars than ditch the journals that reveal them for what they are. And so on.
If the Democratic Party went off the rails, you'd be standing up there on the tracks with crowds of others who'd also jumped off beforehand, wondering how it went so wrong.

(8,419 posts)They have not admitted any fault, accepted any blame. Not only for Trump, but for the Trickle Down Economics, the Iraq War, slamming Kerry, Sarah Palin.
They need a good 12 Step Program. If they can't comprehend the damage they have done they won't correct their behavior.

(82,849 posts)As you point out, the Republicans have been sowing this ground for 40 years or more, and they've reaped a bumper crop of whirlwind. It would be too bad if they had never urped up a candidate like Donald Trump, and for years they didn't. Every election cycle that went by without producing a hack on the level of Trump merely staved off the inevitable unless Republicans changed their ways. They didn't get a Trump for all those years, but instead of changing their policies, they kept pushing all in. Their bet has been called, and it's time for them to turn over their 9-high hand of squat-ah.
