Elderly lesbian woman abused by retirement home residents for being gay, staff 'ignores' pleas.
Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit on July 28 against a senior housing facility for allowing alleged discrimination and verbal abuse from other residents against one of its LGBT residents.
Marsha Marie Wetzel lives at the for-profit Glen St. Andrew Living Community in Niles, IL., where she says her fellow tenants have sought her out taunting her, calling her names and even becoming physical because she is a lesbian.
Wetzels story is told through a video released by Lambda Legal (included in link). In it she says the love of her life, Judy, died from cancer after being together for 30 years.
Judys family, unsympathetic to the womens relationship, seized all of their daughters assets including her home, and subsequently evicted Wetzel.

(31,834 posts)This is why the civil rights movement has to charge. Losing her home with her spouse (30 years makes her a spouse) and certainly being abused is why we have to fight.
She should have had the same rights my parents (mixed race couple in 1969) had. Her Judy should have had the same security in leaving her in a good place my dad had. Shame on us.

(23,156 posts)but you have to wonder why the two women didn't take the appropriate legal steps to protect each other.
This sort of thing -- the family taking everything and evicting the partner who is not a spouse -- likewise happens with heterosexual couples who think a marriage license is an unimportant piece of paper, and also don't make out wills. I'm aware of several such couples, lived together for decades, didn't marry, and then one of them dies, no will, nothing in writing. It's beyond dumb.
So to everyone reading this, get yourself to a lawyer and draw up a will. You won't regret it.

If these two ladies would have been married this never would have happened.
