(51,308 posts)I hope he gets life.
But I'm not a big fan of prison violence.

(5,762 posts)He should be (ahem) segregated for his own protection. That is to say, he should absolutely be kept alive to face justice for his crimes.
If he's in genpop, someone doesn't want him to make it to trial.

Dylann Roof was assaulted by a fellow inmate while in the shower Thursday morning, according to the Charleston County Sheriffs Office.
Roof was not seriously injured and was medically evaluated at the Cannon Detention Center after the 7:45 a.m. incident, said Maj. Eric Watson, of the sheriffs office.
Dwayne Marion Stafford, 25, allegedly exited his cell and ran downstairs to the first level of the jail where Roof was showering and began assaulting him with his hands, according to an incident report. Roof was hit in the face and body and suffered bruising to his face and back. No weapons were involved. Detention officers broke up the fight.

(8,614 posts)This should hold true for ANY prisoner.
You are ok with all prisoners being beaten, if you are ok with ONE being beaten.

* A reminder that schadenfreude is an insufficient word because it doesn't differentiate between whether the partaker of the joy is an asshole or the recipient of the misfortune.

(38,321 posts)We must protect the most basic human rights of everyone, even the most horrible people among us, or we are little better than them.
Isolating dangerous people from society is just, but torturing them or allowing them to be tortured is not.

(2,955 posts)Is nearly as bad as doing it ourselves. Protection against cruel and unusual punishment still applies while they're in prison. Every reasonable attempt needs to be made to protect prisoners from their fellow inmates. Otherwise we're guilty of enabling the abuse of prisoners.

(17,313 posts)AND I agree with those who say Roof put himself in such peril by slaughtering innocent people. So while I wouldn't wish him to be beaten to a pulp, my sympathy is practically non-existent upon hearing the news that he took a beating.
