Sasha Obama lands summer job at Vineyard seafood joint

Good for her! 15 is about the right age to start working, if not earlier.

Sasha Obama, who has lived eight of her 15 years in the luxurious confines of the White House, is learning how the other half lives this summer. The First Daughter is working the takeout window at Nancy’s, a seafood restaurant on Martha’s Vineyard.

Sasha, who’s using her full name of Natasha at Nancy’s, has been learning the ropes of the service industry at the Oak Bluffs eatery this week, working a cash register, busing tables and prepping the restaurant before it opens for lunch.

“She’s been working downstairs at takeout,” said a server at the busy island eatery. “We were wondering why there were six people helping this girl, but then we found out who it was.”

Sasha was accompanied to her summer job yesterday by a contingent of six Secret Service agents, who sat outside the restaurant in a large Suburban SUV and on the takeout benches while the president’s daughter waited on hungry tourists. When her shift ended, Sasha and a friend, who also was wearing the navy blue Nancy’s T-shirt and baseball cap, brought a tray of drinks out to her security contingent, got in the SUV and took off.

Nancy’s is a favorite stop for the First Family, who always pop in for a seafood feed when they are on their annual Martha’s Vineyard vacation. The Obamas reportedly are friends with Nancy’s owner Joe Moujabber, which is how Sasha scored her summer gig.

The Obamas’ youngest daughter has been working an early four-hour shift at the busy, 350-seat restaurant, finishing up just a half hour after it opens for business at 11:30 a.m. Word is, she will only be working until Saturday when her parents arrive for their two-week vacation.

“She’s been around for a few days,” one of the girls working the takeout window told us yesterday. “It’s pretty random.”

The Obamas have been attempting to raise their daughters as normally as possible, considering their dad’s job and all. Which may be why they are letting Sasha get a taste of working a summer job in a resort area — a big change from life in the nation’s capital.

that's what I did to make money. I don't remember feeling pressured, but why did I need money?

The big haul I remember at about 12 was $123.00 for the summer. I remember that because I laid my little change purse down with that $123.00 in it and forgot about it and panicked. I got it back and think I opened up a savings account.

When I turned 13.

He agreed and it set me on a path to a fairly successful career.

I learned the value of working and providing good service.

The problem in this country is not that people have to work, but that we have denigrated people who do real work.

At 15 I worked all summer at the pineapple cannery. Damn that was hard, and extremely noisy. My most memorable moment was when a little old lady said, "You still here, haole girl?"

At 15 all I could do was bus tables and make sure people's coffee cups were full.

I lasted two months and knew I would be a terrible waitress and that was the end of my restaurant career.

Even if Sasha only works a week or so, at least she'll get a clue about what some people go through to earn a living. I'm impressed with her parents for arranging this. (Well, I've been impressed with her parents before, but for other reasons.)

I got "working papers" because I was a few months younger than 16.

The biggest claim to fame of that store was that Susan Lucci (All My Children?) used to shop there, but I never saw her. Evidently, she was polite

Malia was last seen dancing at a concert. She's taking a year off before starting at Harvard, and I'm delighted. No plans? No job? Fine by me -- she's well entitled to a last year of childhood.

One of the smartest decisions I ever made was living at home for a year after finishing college. My sisters thought I was being a slacker, but I got to spend time with my niece (her mother had died the year before), find a job I really wanted, and concentrate on adjusting to the working life. When autumn rolled around, I had enough saved up to get my own place, and my niece had the distraction of adjusting to school life to keep her from missing me too much.

Let her learn what it's like to earn minimum wage, and how to manage her earnings. Too many privileged kids never get the opportunity to learn those lessons, they mostly graduate HS and college knowing there are connections to get a cushy job if they want it, and if not there is always a trust fund to live on. Yeah, they learn to join the junior league and volunteer, however, they never learn the true value of a dollar for an hours work. Sasha may be taking a job away from one other teen this summer, however, someday she'll be in a position to use what she learned from this summer to help numerous teens.

Security wise.

I see the Secret service impeding her being able to work like a everyday person and also causing disruption of the kitchens normal work flow.

I am all for her getting out and working

I know other children of previous first families have done it in the past but in this day and age too many crazies out there and the job is to public.

Sad but true.

what she does the Secret Service is going to prevent her from working "like a real person." Part of the "fun" of being the teen offspring of a President. I can't imagine going to college, any college, with Secret Service in tow. Yikes. Your own narc squad. Maybe that's part of the reason for her sister's gap year.
