SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - A new law goes into effect on Monday in Louisiana that makes it a hate crime to intentionally attack a police officer or first responder just because of their uniform.
La. House Bill No. 953 is formally called Act 184, but it has been referred to as the "Blue Lives Matter" bill. The first of its kind in the country, it was signed into law by Gov. John Bel Edwards on May 26, 2016.
That was long before the deadly ambush of law officers in Baton Rouge just two weeks ago in which 3 officers were killed and three others injured before officers shot and killed the reported gunman.
After Monday, any crime targeting police or other first responders in Louisiana will be deemed a hate crime.
