Is it possible to OD on schadenfreude? I know you can drink til you hurl, eat

Last edited Wed Aug 3, 2016, 10:19 AM - Edit history (1)

til your stomach is too sore to stand it, do any other sort of overindulgence til it causes physical damage, but I'm going to sit here today, watching the unraveling, dismantling of the Nazi, I mean, republican, party today. they are so clearly reaping what they have sown

thank you, republicans!

from the depths of my shallow soul

thank you.

EDIT: please post links to examples of wingnut freakouts here. I'm insatiable today.

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2006/09/26/how-to-make-a-schadenfreude-pie/

My word, what is this dark and vaguely sinister-looking pie you see before you? Well, I’ll tell you. It’s the world’s first Schadenfreude Pie, the pie to enjoy while you are reveling in the horrible misfortunes of others. Why is there a Schadenfreude Pie? Because after I wrote the headline for this entry, I wondered to myself, “what would Schadenfreude Pie taste like?”

My guess: Dark. Rich. And oh so bittersweet.

And you know what? That’s exactly what it tastes like. Also — and this is really just a perfect but unintentional extension of the whole schadenfreude metaphor — you really only want a small slice; too much of this pie and it’ll sit in the pit of your stomach like a rock of judgment, pulling you down. Small slice? Excellent. Big slice? You’ll regret it. Just like schadenfreude itself.

Want a slice? Sure you do. Here’s how you make it.

37. If you make this pie, DO NOT OVERCOOK it!
Wed Aug 3, 2016, 10:28 PM
Aug 2016

I made it tonight with a few changes:

The grocery my husband went to didn't have chocolate graham pie shells so he bought an Oreo crust.

My 40 year old bottle of blackstrap molasses has thickened. I left it upside down over a measuring cup so it could crawl out of the bottle, but then I forgot to put it in. Probably a good thing since the blackstrap molasses would be too strong flavored. Heck, it is too strong - period. After thirty minutes not all the molasses was out of the jar.

The recipe called for a "splash" of Kahlua - I put in 2 teaspoons.

The filling was too much for the pie shell so about a cup and a half went into a pyrex bowl. I set the timer for 20 minutes but my husband didn't think had cooked enough so he cooked it ten minutes longer. Big mistake! Most of the small bowl turned into candy, about the consistency of toffee. It's still delicious, just very adhesive and gooey. We're going to have to soak that bowl for a while to loosen the cooked on sugars.

We both agree that half a cup of chocolate is not enough. Next time there will be a cup of chocolate chips and I WILL remember to put molasses in, this time a lighter molasses from a local source. I may buy two regular graham cracker crusts and just split the mixture between them.

While one may revel in the unraveling of the GOP, one should consider that it is his country that is unraveling at the same time. I think the tendency to see the Opposition in politics as the Enemy can lead to some rather distressing consequences. But so many of the individual politicians in the GOP are subhumans, it's hard not to rejoice whenever they encounter adversity.

Should the GOP break up over this election, which is for some a consummation devoutly to be wished, it will still be necessary to invent it anew. Our politics barely functions as it is with a two-party system, how exactly would a one-party system work?

MOST IMPORTANTLY, if any of that can possibly happen

PUBLIC FINANCING of elections

no more lobbyists/legalized bribery

eliminate the revolving door. lifetime ban on influence peddling jobs once one has served in any legislature. just imagine the lack of egomaniacal greedhead that would stop seeking office to line its pockets

I've lived to see a paranoid crook, a B-actor with obvious dementia, and a phony cowboy who drank his way through life get elected by that party. Given the preference in this country of changing parties in the White House every 8 years, I am making no predictions on this one.

Trump was right in 1999 when he said Republicans were stupid enough to elect him.

by seeing that party in disarray, their old guard and party bosses and political celebrities largely boycotting their own convention, their candidate having to beg for small donations because the big ones aren't rolling in, and their candidate so paranoid that his "campaign staff" is minute and mostly made up of blood relatives and his whole campaign hinges on free air time on cable news channels.

I just agree with his assessment of how dumb Republicans are as I see the rank and file sigh and get into line.

That's why I'm not making predictions. Sorry about that harshed mellow, let's hope it is only temporary and that the man goes down in flames sooner rather than later.

32. sip sip sip....gingrich turns on frankenstein:
Wed Aug 3, 2016, 05:10 PM
Aug 2016
Donald Trump's behavior over the past week has been "very self-destructive" to his campaign, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday, comparing the Republican nominee to a Hall of Fame quarterback who is in the midst of an interception-throwing slump.

"Trump is still behaving like as though it was the primaries and there were 17 candidates. He has not made the transition to being the potential president of the United States, which is a much tougher league," Gingrich said in an interview on Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria." "People are going to watch you every single day. They’re going to take everything they can out of context, and he is not yet performing at the level that you need to."

Gingrich remarked that Trump's performance recalled quarterback Joe Montana's "stretch during his career where he kept throwing interceptions, and, for about half a season, it looked like he wasn’t Joe Montana anymore. And then he figured out what he was doing, and he changed. Trump, Trump is in that kind of a slump," said Gingrich, a Trump supporter who was under final consideration for the vice-presidential slot before Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was chosen.

"It’s like watching a team go out on the field, throw an interception on the first play and go back off the field again," Gingrich continued, alluding to a host of recent comments and battles Trump has waged over the course of the past week, including sparring with the family of a fallen U.S. Army captain who spoke out against him at the Democratic convention; refusing to back prominent Republicans like Paul Ryan, John McCain and Kelly Ayotte in their elections; joking about tossing a baby out of his rally on Tuesday; and generally responding to any personal attack against him.
