Trying to get out of debates, election may be rigged, talking about something be wrong with the polls. His ego is not going to allow him to actually be defeated in an election. His campaign knew they were very far behind. Trump is down now (maybe 7% according to 538), but not yet by the greater than 22% that Johnson beat Goldwater with. So Goldwater knew he was absolutely going to lose. Trump doesn't know that ... yet.
