Fundie-Scarin Funtimes: Satanic Temple Rolls Out After School Satan Clubs Just In Time For Fall!
You've seen The Bloodsucker Proxy, right?
Our favorite Establishment Clause trolls, the funtimes hellraisers of the Satanic Temple, have announced an exciting new program for the 2016-17 school year: After School Satan Clubs, where your little Damien or Lilith can proudly learn all about rationalism and the separation of church and state, in full equality with the after school Christian clubs which fundagelicals have been establishing in schools since a 2001 Supreme Court decision held that schools must allow religious clubs to meet on school grounds. So if Christian clubs can meet, you bet your sweet ass the Satanic Temple is going to insist on equal time! Or as the Educatin With Satan FAQ Six-six-sixsplains:
Is Satanism in schools legal? Yes. The Supreme Court ruled in 2001 in the case of Good News Club v. Milford Central School that schools operate a limited public forum and that, as such, they may not discriminate against religious speech should a religious organization choose to operate an After School Club on their premises. Christian evangelicals particularly the Child Evangelism Fellowship have taken advantage of this ruling ever since. As it is illegal for the schools to discriminate against specific religions or preference others, After School Satan Clubs cannot be denied wherever Christian, or any other religious clubs, operate.
You bet your sweet cloven hooves theyve got lawyers, too! Since evangelicals, especially the legal activist group the Liberty Counsel, are doing their damnedest to get religion into the public schools, then by Crom, the Satanic Temple isnt about to have its rationalist viewpoint left out. Kids attending the clubs wont be casting any hexes (thats witchcraft, which is totally different!) or sacrificing babies to the Dark Lord; instead, theyll be introduced to a uniform syllabus that emphasizes a scientific, rationalist, non-superstitious world view, which probably means theyll do better in school than the little snots singing about Noah and the arky-arky, too. Looky! They even have a cool video with cornball demonic effects!
But wait, isnt this a dangerous intrusion of unwelcome religious teachings into our public schools? TOTALLY, especially since theyre taking plain old critical thinking skills and wrapping em up in the external trappings of religion. Nobody would get all that upset about a critical thinking club after all, so they call it Satanic to provoke the god-botherers and make the point that religion doesnt belong in state-supported schools at all. Satanic Temple spokesman Lucien Greaves (a.k.a. Doug Messner) says in a press release appended to the video,

(113,587 posts)3. you have my deepest sympathies. HOT here, but not quite as bad as down there, and
not a whole lot of humidity.

It has reached 112 with the heat index.
I do not go out during the day.

(113,587 posts)9. the heat dome has been brutal everywhere. our heat index has hit 101 a couple of times,
but we are not nearly as bad as other places, which I try to remind myself of when I am about to pass out.
yesterday, the forecast high for friday was 72. alas, it has changed to 80+. by friday it will probably be back up to 90 again.
the stores are getting in all their fall and halloween stuff. I think they are just being mean.

whether to laugh my ass off, applaud a great idea, or be concerned that this video increases the fear and hatred of rational thinking, free inquiry, and fun exponentially among the religious right.

(113,587 posts)6. since we are intelligent beings, I think we can do all of the above.
