I'm just curious.
I have three bosses to whom I report directly. All women.

(14,856 posts)... awhile back titled "The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature" by Steven Pinker.
I became curious about Pinker, and evolutionary psychologist and linguist, after seeing him take issue with some of Noam Chomsky's ideas. I'm a big fan of Chomsky, but I wanted to get Pinker's viewpoints too.
Anyway, he's got a chapter in that book about gender differences. He made compelling arguments that men and women's brains are indeed inherently different -- on average, not for every individual. One of the statements was that, despite efforts to get more women in math, science and engineering, it's not likely going to help very much if most of them don't WANT to pursue those careers. Women, according to Pinker, tend to have superior abilities in language and social relationships.

(22,165 posts)Luckily I've only had to report directly to one person with my current employer. More than one direct boss would drive me insane.
I've worked for the same company 4.5 years. Been promoted twice. All of my immediate bosses have been women in that time.
There are a good mix of male and female leaders in the company, but it happens that my division has more female leaders. People have suggested that it must bother me to be the lone man in meeting rooms full of women. It's a stupid comment, but to be diplomatic I just say that I have three sisters and this situation is no big deal to me.
Actually, it's easier because we're all adults and there's no sibling rivalry.

(12,157 posts)but I had 2 women supervisors over time. One was adequate. She had worked in our field and she was a good administrator. This one only gets adequate because she was a bit prejudiced towards the women who worked for her. The other is right up there in the stars of the 3 best supervisors I ever worked under. She was empowering of all those who worked for her. She had very good knowledge of the technical side of our work and she was an excellent administrator. Whenever she got a monetary bonus for the excellence of the work group she shared the largess with us. Her only fault was not so much a fault but ended up causing us to lose her was she would mercilessly attack and department head that tried to make her unit (us) look bad. She made enemies and we lost a great captain. I might still be working if she was still our boss.
That's my experience of close to 50 years work experience. I worked with and for women. What I saw is that gender makes no difference in ability. Just as men can be very good or mediocre the same can be said of women. If some one makes an offhand judgement about someone because of their ethnicity or gender they are dead wrong. They must be judged on merit.
Edit to add- I would've been an awful boss. I never wanted to be boss but I know that I would suck at it. I can work well alone or as part of a team but not in charge. One of the pluses of getting older is you can begin to know who you are. Is that the beginning of wisdom?

(46,179 posts)The technical answer is one. He's male. He's my building principal. He observes me, evaluates me, and is my primary "boss."
In reality, the parents of my students are also "bosses" to some extent, and so are the admins at the district level above my boss; my boss' bosses.
Generally, there is supposed to be a protocol that says parents first come to me, then to the building principal, then to the district with their concerns. And the district, for most things, goes to the principal, who goes to me. Except when it's some committee of some kind that I've been placed on; then the district works with us, and we take it back to our principals.

(3,650 posts)Another temporary boss - also a woman. I really don't do any work with either of them though. I'm in LA and most of the co-workers I deal with are in New York. I could probably spend several hours a day at a bar, if I was so inclined, and nobody would notice.
