Houston Chronicle Endorses Hillary!

These are unsettling times that require a steady hand: That's not Donald Trump.

On Nov. 8, 2016, the American people will decide between two presidential contenders who represent the starkest political choice in living memory. They will choose between one candidate with vast experience and a lifelong dedication to public service and another totally lacking in qualifications to be president. They will decide whether they prefer someone deeply familiar with the issues that are important to this nation or a person whose paper-thin, bumper-sticker proposals would be dangerous to the nation and the world if somehow they were enacted

Any one of Trump's less-than-sterling qualities - his erratic temperament, his dodgy business practices, his racism, his Putin-like strongman inclinations and faux-populist demagoguery, his contempt for the rule of law, his ignorance - is enough to be disqualifying. His convention-speech comment, "I alone can fix it," should make every American shudder. He is, we believe, a danger to the Republic.

Americans know Hillary Clinton; post-Philadelphia, they're even better acquainted with "the real Hillary Clinton," as her husband phrased it. After her quarter century and more in the public eye, they know her strengths and her weaknesses. Anyone who has paid even a modicum of attention to her experience as first lady, as U.S. senator, as secretary of state and as candidate for president will have at least a general notion of her positions on the issues. As President Obama noted, she's the most qualified person in years to serve as president - "and that includes Bill and me." The only candidate to come close is George H.W. Bush.

America's first female president would be in the Oval Office more than a century and a half after a determined group of women launched the women's suffrage movement, almost a century after women in this country won the right to vote. It's a milestone, to be sure. Few could have imagined it would be so consequential.

After all, why not? Nothing will change between now and November except dumdum will continue to humiliate himself and Hillary will continue to soar.

5. It's a nice dream

It will be interesting to see the dynamics this year. The RW crazies will fire up the fear machine to 11 and get a big turnout as a result. However, I'm hoping there will be a big outreach to Hispanics and other minorities which will help the down ticket races. Doubtful we'll get a state wide office, but maybe a few of the marginal House (state and federal) and the state senate races will flip Blue. Would love to get back the ability to filibuster this year.

I'm thinking Texas will be purple in about 8-12 years. The main issue is not the rise in the number of minorities, rather the success of the RW to disenfranchise and discourage minorities from exercising their rights. Or to be more blunt, a fortress mentality where anything goes on the part of the RW.

On Edit, AZ has the California influx as well as the rise of minorities. So, it's dynamics are more immediate.

11. Who knows with AZ

The Mormons are a good chunk of the pop. and they don't like Trump despite being a fellow Republican. Sen. Flake famously had to "mow his lawn" instead of going to the RNC convention. If the Mormons decide to stay home AND the Latinos show up in large numbers AND the students show up AND the independents break for Clinton, then hmm, things could turn around. But I wouldn't hold my breath, unfortunately.

Just my two cents. Note I live in a crimson red district in AZ so my viewpoint might be skewed.

I would have never thought anyone could truly give him a run for his money.
