Dictionary definition

It's usually condescending to post dictionary definitions to make a point but this one, from the Oxford Concise English Dictionary is an exception:

Trumpery
(archaic)

Noun (plural trumperies)
articles, practices or beliefs of superficial appeal but little real value or worth
Adjective showy but worthless

Origin Middle English (denoting trickery): from Old French tromporie, from tromper 'deceive'.

Ed. Typo

A much older and wiser professor stated that, 'People don't change'. In my youthful zeal I argued.

Now I know that people do not change.

The Oxford English Dictionary,

trump, n.1
1.
e. slang or vulgar. The act of breaking wind audibly.

1903 in J. S. Farmer & W. E. Henley Slang

And that's not archaic. I pointed it out back in 2014, but didn't realise Americans didn't use it: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014906752#post9

Charges that are fraudulently made to make a person appear guilty. That word fraud sure shows up a lot with the word TRUMP.
