Why are Republicans supporting Donald Trump?

Can they really not see that he is a vulgarian?

Can they not see that he is a pathological liar?

Can they not see the danger and the threat of having him in the Oval Office?

With all the choices they were offered, why did they choose Trump??

Were they really that pissed off at the Republican Party?

Is it obvious or is it just a matter of perception?

Do they truly love America but simply do not realize what they are doing to our country?

He is also appealing to the lowest common denominator of many conservatives: bigotry.

1) Hillary - Whitewater!

2) Hillary spends a lot of money on her clothes, and yet Ivanka Trump's dress was only $125 and look how much better she looks.

3) Mexicans!

4) I hate socialism.

5) Donald Trump is such a good businessman.

6) Donald Trump will keep terrorists out of our country.

I swear, the stupid is dripping off of them.

Confession: I'm right now actively not talking to my husband. An Obama supporter, he said he's voting for Trump. I'm f'n flabbergasted. I said, "Why?" He answered, "I don't like Hillary." When I asked why, he said, "Because of Whitewater."

Now, I imagine if pressed, my husband has no idea what the hell Whitewater was even about. I then asked him, "What will our two daughters who have health insurance through the exchange do if Trump is elected?"

"What do you mean?"

"Trump said he was going to get rid of Obamacare. So, what will they do?"

"Well, what did Trump say he was going to do?"

The last words I've spoken to him besides, "Your dinner is ready," were: "You tell me. He has no plan, but he's going to do something great."

said very plainly she would not vote for Hillary in the general while we were talking early in the primary. However, she fully recognizes what Trump is, and I knew then if it came down to it she would do the right thing.

Her family are all died in the wool Rs, and we went to an event last week where it was a table full of cons, and we were talking afterwards.

She hates them both, but she implied she will vote Hillary.

She will get there.

Her parents are really good people, but country and again, steady Rs. My father in law has a half dozen NRA hats. He talked ever so briefly about Trump at the event, and I could tell, he really did not like him and knows he is what he is, and he didn't like it, but probably still going to vote for him.

NOTHING you could say to change their minds. They know my politics, and I just don't say much. Again, really good people and they treat me very well. But, part of it is my keeping my mouth shut on this stuff.

The event we were at as a river ride, and when the discussion turned to trump, again, I just had to keep my mouth shut, because, half seriously, had I not I very possibly would have had to swim ashore.

Sometimes when I share about my Republican husband, people respond, "He must not be a good man" or "How could you be married to someone who votes Republican?"

Right now, I'm so disappointed in him. But I'm going to sit in the living room tonight with the Democratic Convention on and he'll hear with his own ears the difference. Whether he takes it to heart, that's another story.

My wife votes mostly D, just has fallen into the thing about Hillary ... So, it normally isn't on the edge like this.

But, I have a LOT of republicans in my life. And I have been active enough politically that they know where I am on things, but as long as I am respectful of their way of thinking it is good.

People are people, for the life of me I don't get it, so many decent and good people who are completely in line with it, but it is there and I can't live a life where I burn bridges with so many people over it, even as important as it is.

Good luck!

She was advertizing her clothing line. The more people see her in the clothes from her line the more money she is likely to make. Second, Melania's dress cost about $1,200-$2,100. Rich people tend to wear expensive clothing because they can afford to pay high prices. I am fairly certain that before Ivanka Trump started her own clothing line she wore dresses that cost hundreds and thousands of dollars.

Can they really not see that he is a vulgarian?

Actually, I think that's part of the appeal for them. He's being "authentic." He's "telling it like it is."

Can they not see that he is a pathological liar?

Nope. Because most of them are low information voters. Sometimes that's unintentional. Others do not want to know because that way, they can remain comfortable with their prejudices and easy answers.

Can they not see the danger and the threat of having him in the Oval Office?

No. Again, low information voters.

With all the choices they were offered, why did they choose Trump??

OK. Because:

- Cruz is super creepy
- Rubio is obviously weak (a mortal sin in the Grand Old Authoritarian Party)
- Jeb is also obviously weak
- Kasich looks like a wimp
- Carson is black, which is good for an exit poll but not for the actual vote in the GOP
- Christie is too fat (having lost 115 pounds over the past 2 years I can tell you that people definitely judge weight)
- Huckabee is too slimy religious for even the GOP (and split that demographic with Cruz)
- Fiorina is female and you don't get to be female and on the GOP ticket unless you have the so-called "hot librarian" look
- Lindsay Graham sounds too much like Scarlett O'Hara to make anyone in the GOP comfortable
- Rand Paul is too libertarian and Republicans won't vote for a candidate with a perm (or is it a bad toupee?)
- Rick Santorum is religious nutcase enough, but also too establishment
- Jim Gilmore is... is... who the fuck is Jim Gilmore, again?
- Bobby Jindal is too furrin'
- Rick Perry is too damn dumb, even for the GOP
- George Pataki's last name is not Murkin enough and would be too forgettable for a one-man race

Were they really that pissed off at the Republican Party?

I think so. Fox News incited them and it snowballed out of their control.

Is it obvious or is it just a matter of perception?

It's a matter of ignorance, sometimes willful.

Do they truly love America but simply do not realize what they are doing to our country?

I think they truly love their romanticized notion of 1950's America. I think they want an America where they are comfortable and don't have to accommodate someone else's viewpoint. Of course there are exceptions and I've talked to them. But I think also a lot of it has been the effect of almost a quarter century of unrelenting assault on Hillary Clinton. Around here (East Tennessee), there are hardly any Trump signs, which is unusual as hell. Most political signs are for local candidates. Lots around here don't like the idea of voting for Trump but haven't noticed that many of the Clinton "scandals" were bullshit. And there are a lot of people on this board (many of which have left for redder skies) who have swallowed that particular bait, too. Anyone who has ever tried to start a fire by hand will tell you that the saying "where there's smoke, there's fire" is definitely false, but lots of people buy into it anyway. I think Kaine might be really be able to connect down here.

Just like all of the Bernie supporters are being told to suck it up and vote for Hillary, the whatever other Republican candidates are likewise being told to suck it up and vote for Trump.

The perils of a two party system.
