No country is immune from extremism, says Teo Chee Hean
SINGAPORE: Lone wolf attacks like the shooting spree in Munich, Germany on Friday (Jul 22) are grim reminders that no country is immune from extremism, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on Saturday.
Speaking on the sidelines of a racial harmony event, he stressed that Singapore should not take peace for granted. It's important to look at all these attacks that are taking place around the world and to use them to give us more resolve to make sure that the peace and harmony we enjoy is maintained."
He also referred to the recent clampdowns of terror suspects in Malaysia and Indonesia, citing arrests in Malaysia and the killing of a top terror leader in Indonesia.
This reflects the level of activities that's going on in the countries around us. Here in Singapore, we've also had to deal with people who encourage extremism and encourage violence," said Mr Teo, who is also the Coordinating Minister for National Security.
He said that it is important for the community to look out for one another. For instance, if they know someone going down the wrong path, it is important to bring it up by speaking to friends, religious teachers or security agencies, so that together they can help the person, the persons family and the community.
