Legion of Honor awarded to Japanese-American soldier
Japanese-American soldier Edward Yamasaki has been awarded the Legion of Honor, the highest French decoration, in recognition of his services to "liberating France."
Yamasaki served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a U.S. Army corps of Japanese-Americans who suffered great casualties fighting to free Europe from the grip of Nazi Germany in World War II.
“I wish to tell posterity what war is like,” the 92-year-old said.
The third-generation Japanese-American was born in Hawaii. He was a high school student when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
Priests, teachers and other leaders of the Japanese-American community were sent to internment camps. Yamasaki volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army to demonstrate his allegiance.
