Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWell, hi there DU! How’re y’all doin’? Whatcha been up to?
I took a little sabbatical about 6 months ago with one minor interruption. It got a little too evil in here, and that just wasnt my style, so I just dropped out of sight for a while. I didnt think it was worth a big proclamation with a marching band and fireworks, so I skipped that part.
A quick look around shows a bunch of new faces, and some welcome old ones. I was told some embittered former ones have left altogether, off to a board where they can commiserate among themselves. I looked, and they seem content to be there, if not exactly content per se. Some of the obvious minions sent out by Rove and Friends have returned to those dark places from whence they must have crawled, and the steady stream of I-Hate-Hillary invective on DU seems to have slowed to an insignificant trickle. That is a welcome change, as there is certainly enough of it elsewhere.
HRC has made her choice for VP, and while Tim Kaine might not have been my first choice, he seems to have a lot more to offer us than might have met the eye prior to scrutiny now underway. A friend of mine, Jim Hamilton, was in charge of vetting Hillarys possibles, and Jim is nothing if not thorough. Its not for nothing that over 40 years ago, another man from North Carolina (Sen. Sam Ervin) got young Jim involved in the Watergate investigation that eventually brought Nixon down. If Kaine made it through Jims wringer, hes got some chops.
Another friend of mine, a former Governor of Vermont whose name is still remembered by some, told me years ago that there was a lot more substance to Tim Kaine than most people knew. I was skeptical, but I have never met Kaine, and I had no real basis for judgment. From a few posts I have seen here, Howard knew a lot more than I did. I have seen plenty of Howard has sold out posts around the internet, but Howard told me in 2009 that if he didnt get a cabinet post, hed lend his name to some law firm for name recognition (for them) and some steady income (for him), and spend most of his time raising hell for causes I care about. And not just in the USA. A couple of years back, he organized a walk from Bangkok to the Burmese border to call attention to human trafficking. I wonder how many of his internet haters participated in that or anything like it?
I could have met Kaine (and Howard) this coming week in Philadelphia, but I passed on the invitation. It was not a decision I made lightly. In the offer were VIP hotel and passes to all events, etc. and no one asked me for a cent. Coffee one-on-one with Cecile Richards (also a friend), and all sorts of cool stuff, whats not to like? It was flattering to get such an invitation, but I was in a different country EVERY DAY for work for most of May and ALL of June, and I need the down time more than I need the glad-handing, the strategy sessions and the photo ops. Im not 30 anymore. I doubt I would have enjoyed the convention much if I had had to spend half of it at the ICU unit of the cardiac ward of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. I somehow think the Party will manage just fine without me this time.
My wife and I are currently with our neighbors from Germany who are visiting with us here in Nowheresville, Cape Cod. The road to this place isnt even paved. Just what we were looking for.
This seems as good a time as any to try a return to DU. After all, I was here for something like ten years prior to my absence. There seem to be a few self-righteous types around, still, but what else is new? Someones always looking for a fight. Where WONT you find them? What matters to me is that the level of discussion has been brought back up from sulfuric acid to something much more resembling a neutral pH level, and thats good enough for me. Things ARE sounding a little (OK, a LOT) more upbeat than they were when I left.
So, OK, DU, what HAVE yall been up to?

(54,405 posts)I was at the Denver convention in 2008, and it was heady stuff, indeed. Howard was still DNC chairman then, and it was a laugh getting all those "who the hell is THAT guy?" stares when I got a big bear hug from Howard when he saw me. Plus hanging with pals from the Texas Democrats, and just a string of good people (Henry Waxman, John Conyers, Amy Goodman, John Nichols, the list just went on and on). It was not an easy decision this time to pass, as you can imagine, plus ten times the perks as well!
But I DO need the down time, and I'll be seeing most of the people I would have seen sooner or later. My wife is happy I won't be disappearing for one week out of our vacation, and I'm happy to spend time with her that is not restricted to the hours between 11:30 PM and 5:00 AM. I'll be doing the local radio show tomorrow that I always do once a year here, and WDR (West German Radio) has asked if they can do some phone interviews during next week's convention. Other that that, though, I'm taking it very easy.
I felt like Dr. Zhivago in that scene where, after some particularly brutal carnage of the Russian Civil War, he just turned on his horse and rode away. Zhivago had had enough of the fighting, and so had I. I think I have come back to a more civil place.

(205,467 posts)Though it would certainly be exciting. However, this has turned out to be an election season like no other, and I don't mean that in a good way. The tension and pressure has to be enormous since there is so much at stake, this time around...
And it absolutely sounds like you know some amazing people. I don't know if you remember, but John Conyers once posted here, so he's officially a DUer! For awhile, so many of us changed avatars to John Conyers in honor of his visit - and his leadership in confronting the 2004 voting irregularities and standing up to the Bush* administration - that it was tough to tell us apart, LOL! Of course, half the board replied to him and I had to laugh since the first poster who replied had a John Conyers avatar...
I know exactly what you mean about needing a break, remember thinking that the 2004 primary season here was particularly rough, but it couldn't touch this one! I took a break myself, and things seem to have settled down for the most part, but there is some residual tension which is no doubt going to be with us until we no longer have the most bizarre and scary election in history behind us.
But it's great to see you back and I'm looking forward to hearing about what you're up to! Welcome home!

(12,157 posts)I took a modified sabbatical by trashing certain names, forums and groups. It's great that the primaries are over.

(54,405 posts)The primaries this time were absolutely insane. I got the impression there was a LOT of infiltration from the right, and there was a lot of kindling on the left just waiting for the spark the infiltrators were only too willing to provide. I'm sure the Philly convention will offer some golden opportunities for the right to try to make it look like a repeat of Chicago, 1968. I would hope we don't fall for it. Once again, and more than could possibly have been imagined 48 years ago, "the whole world's watching."

I confess to a bit of it myself. But with Bernie now backing HRC, we
Democrats now need to focus on defeating the yam.

(81,312 posts)I'm back now, too. And it's a lot more like the DU I remembered so fondly - where the comradeship was warm and inclusive, and the discussion was scintillating and sometimes most educational (in a good way)! Glad you're back. I'm glad I'm back, too. But it was VERY helpful and healing to step away for awhile.
We're so much better here when we're not at each other's throats. And we all recognize the REAL enemy - the common enemy we all share.

(4,359 posts)Since I disappeared from DU I've done over 400 appearances supporting kids with special needs or LGBTQ youth and teachers. Met a president, Secretary of State Clinton, and four other cabinet secretaries, half a dozen governors, got named a Kentucky Colonel and was given the NEA LGBTQ caucus Teacher Role Model Award the same week I was fired. I've been busy standing up for kids!
I tried to return to DU a six months ago but couldn't stand seeing the DU I loved busy heating tar and plucking feathers. I'm glad to be back!

(8,173 posts)Yes, DU has calmed down quite a bit fortunately. I've been here since 2001, have seen a lot of primaries and this has been the worst. Still not believing the Repubs actually nominated Trump. Sad!
Your take on the convention would have been interesting but I get that you need the down time. Enjoy!

(54,405 posts)Our friends from Germany have to leave tomorrow (many tears already being shed--by them!). So, we are preparing a big send-off dinner. My wife is a master chef, so that is no idle statement. We were already at both sides of the water, both national seashore and bay side. I will be on WOMR-FM tomorrow starting at about 11:00 in the morning if you want to listen in. As always, the time here races past unmercifully. I can't even conceive that in exactly two weeks we'll be in southern California. By then, the conventions' buzz will have worn off, and the campaign will begin in earnest. Should be interesting!

My wife yells at CNN everyday. For our mental health, we may have to cancel Direct TV until after the election.

(90,714 posts)Your observations about DU are pretty spot on, tho we still have a few folks who are rooting for the demise of the Democratic Party, if not Western Civilization itself.

What seems to be the take on our presidential race in Europe/Germany, or is it not really on their radar yet?
DFW
(54,405 posts)They cannot believe Trump or anyone like him has become the candidate for president of one of our major parties, or even less that he has any support whatsoever. It is scaring the living crap out of them that he is polling higher than any of their own extremist rightist movements in any major European country.
A Trump victory would have serious consequences for NATO, the Dollar, and the willingness to continue to allow U.S. military bases in Europe.
