Trump staff writer responsible for Melania's speech falls on sword for the greater good

You knew there would be a sacrificial lamb. Meet the lamb.

The statement is in PDF format, so you're going to have to go here to read it:

https://assets.donaldjtrump.com/MeredithStatement.pdf

Short version: Meredith McIver, staff writer for Trump, was on the phone with Melania. Melania read Michelle Obama's remarks to her. McIver copied them down, claims to not have checked the original speech, used what Melania gave her verbatim, and has now resigned, apologizing for her 'innocent mistake" and the way the uproar has "distracting" people from Trump's "historic" campaign.

Did Meredith McIver insert it, or did a third party with a wicked cool sense of humor do the deed?

I strongly believe a third party, somehow, maliciously inserted the lines and punked the Trumps.

Melania Trump: "He will never, ever give up. And most important, he will never, ever let you down."

Rick Astley: "Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down."

David Corn Tweeted the statement. There were two, both from the Trump campaign. Trump Tweeted the link to the two PDF statements. I posted the one from McIver because it was the most relevant. The link leads directly to a PDF, which is McIver's letter explaining why she resigned from the campaign.

But thank you for accusing me of posting a "bogus" link anyway. That was very special. You don't want to click on it, don't click on it, but it is not "bogus."

It must have cost Trump a bundle to try to get out of this pickle.

Check on Meredith a year from now. She if she isn't driving some
fine wheels and living in a gated community in Boca Raton.

...and McIver "ghost wrote" it.

The second PDF, which was in Trump's Tweet but I didn't link to, was from the Trump campaign, saying essentially that this little incident should not detract from Melania's beautiful feelings about beautiful America.

...McIver says that Melania "always liked Mrs. Obama" and "read some excerpts of her speech over the phone" which she "wrote down as examples" and then claims she did not then check Michelle's speech after that.

So what she does not explicitly say in the PDF was whether Melania said something like "Let me read Michelle's speech to you." She may have just read it, and the part about how she always liked her and reading excerpts may have just been the act of McIver falling on her sword.

She claims she copied down Ms. Trumps words verbatim and that puts the plagiarism charge squarely back on Ms. Trump.

...if she told McIver "I am going to read some excerpts from Michelle's speech" and McIver wrote them down and just put them in the teleprompter, then McIver committed plagiarism and knew it.

If, on the other hand, Melania just read the speech without any discussion of Michelle, there is no way McIver would have known, unless she was a political historian and recognized the words and used them anyway.

My "educated guess" is that Melania just read the speech over the phone, McIver wrote down everything she said, massaged Melania's own words, and that became the speech. Then McIver took the fall.

Like I say, an educated guess.

33. While it's certainly possible it happened that way...

I really don't believe either of these people.

First would be Melania, for if we take her at her word that she admires MO and was so moved by her speech that she wanted to use it as a framework for her own speech, but failed to recognize that the finished product contained identical verbiage that makes her an idiot. What makes her story especially egregious is proudly asserting to Matt Lauer that she was the main author of the speech and that makes her a liar on multiple levels and an idiot for not proofreading the text.

Second, McIver indicates in her letter that she took down Melania's words "verbatim". This was not some stream of consciousness thing. McIver claims to be a "family friend" of the Trumps and if that's true, one would assume that she is familiar with Melania's verbal speech patterns, and therefore would certainly notice if Melania was reading her own words. If Melania was reading text from MO's speech it wold not flow as if she had written it herself and surely would or should have raised a red flag. If it did and she said nothing out of fear, then she's complicit. If it didn't then she is also a liar and an idiot.

That's my read on it.

So Princess Melania of Slovenia dictates Michele's speech to King Don's speech writer, who she rightly views as a family servant who must obey, and then fires the servant for obeying

The charge has just been elevated to cynical and intentional plagiarism from the stupid innocent kind

These folks are not the cream of the crop brainwise

On edit McIver is an employee of Trump Inc so Melania didn't view her as a family servant, she is a family servant
