Boycott Citizens United and Dark Money?

Here's an idea, and I'd like your opinion on it.

We went after Glenn Beck's advertisers and he's gone. We went after Limbaugh's advertisers and he's on the way to being gone, and has actually toned down his rhetoric. Why not go after Citizens United and Dark Money PACs at the source?

Organize a boycott of networks, television stations and newspapers that do not give EQUAL TIME to both sides, as opposed to 7 or 8 to 1 time for one side, as we just saw in Wisconsin.

The Fairness Doctrine has been scrapped as a government policy, and the Nation has definitely suffered for it. But there is no reason why citizens can't do it without government help. Simply organize a boycott of national television networks and local TV stations that do not go by the EQUAL TIME doctrine. Just say to the television stations "don't worry, you'll sell all your advertising time. But just because one side offers to buy ten times as many attack ads as the other side doesn't mean you have to SELL it to them. And if you do, the side on the losing end of that will boycott you. Remember, roughly half the country are Democratic Party supporters, and thus half your viewers are also Democratic Party supporters." MEDIA MATTERS would be glad to keep track of the number of ads for each side being shown by each television network/station. All we need are local Democratic Party organizations to organize the boycott.

What do you think?

It was kind of shocking to see how many things they have their grubby hands in. I had to stop buying products I'd purchased for years. Now when I buy the products I replaced them with, I know I'm not putting money in their pockets so they can spend it against my interests.

I called a local television station when I'd heard the network was airing a program based on a true story, but learned it was more right wing propaganda than anything else. The program was aired right before an election. I told the station if they showed it, I would watch another local station for news, weather, etc., and would stop watching that network as well. The person I spoke to seemed concerned that I took the time to call.

They aired it, and I quit watching. Their news, weather, and sports used to be #1 in its market, it's now #3, and has been for years. I wonder how many others quit watching. Dropping to #3 had to have hurt their ad rates a lot. That seems to be the only thing they care about these days.

If your idea could catch on, I believe it could have an impact.
