Announcer says Turkey is now run by 'peace council'
http://www.itv.com/news/update/2016-07-15/announcer-says-turkey-is-now-run-by-peace-council/
An announcer on Turkey's state broadcaster has said the country is now run by a "peace council" which will ensure the safety of the population.
They said the current government had "eroded" democratic and secular rule, adding:
A new constitution will be drawn up as soon as possible
Public order will not be damaged
Freedom of citizens will be guaranteed regardless of religion, race and language
Martial law will be imposed

(3,040 posts)Erdogan was a power hungry despot that would not have stepped down peacefully. He jailed -- and killed --nyone that spoke negatively about them.

(4,187 posts)I took a course in my senior year of college on Turkish politics. This was a long time ago, but one thing we learned is that whenever there is a military coup in Turkey, the long-term result is that democracy is weakened. Even though Erdogan is a dictator in every sense of the word, it would be much better for the people to overthrow him than for the military to do so.
Personally, I happen to think that Erdogan planned this whole thing.

(4,187 posts)A military coup is never a good thing -- not even in Turkey, and not even when it is done to kick a religious nutcase out of power. It only strengthens the resolve of the supporters of the religious nutcase.

(3,145 posts)Their base are the deeply religious, rural dwellers, and the working class. People who feel faith has been driven from the public square and those who resent the "elites" in Istanbul.
The fundamental difference between the two is how much religion means to them: Erdogan is a committed Islamist while Donny merely pays lip service to faith.

Or the Defense of Marriage Act.
There's a comedian who does a bit about how when the government wants to ramrod something down the throats of the populace, they just name it the opposite of what it actually does.
Erdogan is a snake and I will be very happy to see him go. But when they claim a "peace council" is running things, that is much more alarming than most of the other details of this situation.

(1,151 posts)However, Erdogan (and Trump should he win) should NOT be removed by military coup, should be removed either at the ballot box or through impeachment, or if it HAS to be done extralegally, by a popular uprising.
Military coups cause more problems than they solve no matter how bad the person they're removing is.
