It was almost 20 years ago and I wish that I had pictures, but the memories of the city still resonate with me today.
My heart goes out to everyone there in this time of tragedy, may they find peace again in such a beautiful place.

A French friend of mine went to a job in Philadelphia a couple years back. An American co-worker had no idea where France even was. She thought it might be near Delaware.
No offense intended, just an observation.
Nice is near Cannes. You've heard of the Cannes Film Festival, hopefully.
Nice is pronounced Neess. Not like ice. As in Nissa, (Neeeeesa) its original Italian name.
Cannes is pronounced like tin Can. No S. Just 'Can'. like someone from upstate NY would pronounce it. Not Con. Not Kahn. Just Can.
It's the part of the world where one goes UP to Italy. Or east, technically, in fact.

(73,631 posts)That whole area of the Riviera is remarkably beautiful and the people are very nice and friendly as well.
Once day, I hope to go back to visit.

(1,232 posts)That's why I make my home here, for the most part. I spend my time mostly here, and in Paris every few weeks as well.
When I'm in the South, I want to be in Paris. When I'm in Paris, I want to be back down here.
I'm just outside of Cannes. I actually detest Nice, quite sincerely, preferring Mougins, Valbonne, Grasse & Cannes and Antibes, it's all very close.
I love the Riviera. The moment I set foot here, I felt like I was home.
My friends up in the mountains above Nice had SNOW today, in a ski village called Isola. Go figure!

(81,323 posts)Loved the sun, the sea, the beach, the food, the culture, the overall vibe. They had a good time. Glad they were there when it was happy. It was her second time through the south of France. I grew up studying French in school. Beautiful France is hit, again.
This hurts, badly.

(32,723 posts)Europe has been dealing with this crap long before 9/11 including a domestic French separatist movement.
They know the best response to terrorism is to refuse to be terrorized.

Something drastic needs to be done about these attacks.

(31,828 posts)And it wasn't 20 years ago. It's been many many times every chance I get. It was not just Bastille Day or Nice - but high season for the summer "holiday". Lots of folks go there - even if it is camping.

(10,406 posts)It's been many a year since I visited, but it is a beautiful city and beautiful area of the world. The flower market there was heavenly.
I am so sorry for the people of France.

(4,311 posts)Nothing will change in Nice, or anywhere in France. The French will not be cowed. They will still gather in public, celebrate, socialise, and have fun. The terrorists cannot win there.
