(24,764 posts)They're the stochastic terrorists behind the lone wolves for the most part, especially in that it gives them plausible deniability. In any other country, the right-wing shock jocks would be presumed guilty of inciting terrorism, but they hide behind the Constitution, often successfully.

(99,710 posts)Initial reports indicate that Mateen is a lone wolf, inspired by a terrorist groups ideology but not under its operational control. Recognizing the difference between ISIS inspired and ISIS directed attacks is vital. ISIS-inspired attacks are more likely to be amateurish, and indeed the jihadist record of attacks in the United States since 9/11 but prior to Orlando is thankfully poor. The horrific nightclub attack shows what a loner with the right weaponry can do, but when ISIS directs an attack, as it did in Paris in 2015, the results are likely to be even bloodier.

(39,343 posts)Didn't need a bomb, gun, knife, nothing. We're going to need to work on physical security.
I feel so bad for the families.
No more plastic barricades like this:
These need to be all over the place instead:
If you're at a public event with your family, be careful.

(587 posts)Installing pop-up barriers everywhere that a plurality of people could be?
We would have them every 10 feet along the roadway as well as hardened crash barriers along every street. I'm sure it would only cost several trillion dollars that we don't have.
IMO the better solution, as with all stuff like this, is not to try to combat the tools that the crazies use, but rather to identify the crazies themselves and stop them.
NightWatcher
(39,343 posts)This was along a public promenade. You'd need barricades at each end and choke points along access routes.
DC and many other major metropolitan cities already use these around strategic gathering places and potential targets.
Lone wolves will hunt out soft targets, so we must harden these places, because there's no way to find each religious nut with an Internet connection.
