They're the stochastic terrorists behind the lone wolves for the most part, especially in that it gives them plausible deniability. In any other country, the right-wing shock jocks would be presumed guilty of inciting terrorism, but they hide behind the Constitution, often successfully.

in that his wife took part in his assessing of his target, his father espoused the same anti-gay aggression and political delusions. He acted in context and along with family members up until the night, basically.

Mateen was a sociopathic homophobe but there in no evidence he was part of a terrorist organization.

The attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando that killed 49 people is not only the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11, it is more deadly than all the other jihadist attacks on U.S. soil since then combined.* But even though shooter Omar Mateen apparently pledged allegiance to ISIS in a last-minute 911 call, the assault is far from a classic ISIS strike, and we should be wary of conflating two very different kinds of events.

Initial reports indicate that Mateen is a lone wolf, inspired by a terrorist group’s ideology but not under its operational control. Recognizing the difference between “ISIS inspired” and “ISIS directed” attacks is vital. ISIS-inspired attacks are more likely to be amateurish, and indeed the jihadist record of attacks in the United States since 9/11 but prior to Orlando is thankfully poor. The horrific nightclub attack shows what a loner with the right weaponry can do, but when ISIS directs an attack, as it did in Paris in 2015, the results are likely to be even bloodier.

Didn't need a bomb, gun, knife, nothing. We're going to need to work on physical security.

I feel so bad for the families.

No more plastic barricades like this:

These need to be all over the place instead:

If you're at a public event with your family, be careful.

Installing pop-up barriers everywhere that a plurality of people could be?

We would have them every 10 feet along the roadway as well as hardened crash barriers along every street. I'm sure it would only cost several trillion dollars that we don't have.

IMO the better solution, as with all stuff like this, is not to try to combat the tools that the crazies use, but rather to identify the crazies themselves and stop them.

This was along a public promenade. You'd need barricades at each end and choke points along access routes.

DC and many other major metropolitan cities already use these around strategic gathering places and potential targets.

Lone wolves will hunt out soft targets, so we must harden these places, because there's no way to find each religious nut with an Internet connection.

Either to stop vehicle-as-weapon, vehicle-as-entry-method for robberies, and vehicle-through-crowd.

Remember that case a few years back where some addled senior ran a Buick through a farmer's market?
