Bill Nelson's prepared statement regarding voter purge lawsuit.

As I was heading to the Capitol this morning, I couldn’t help but think about the jolting news from my state: the Justice Department will sue Florida over its purge of voting rolls.

Being a native Floridian whose family came to Florida 183 years ago, and having served the people of my state for years, I simply cannot believe the State of Florida would deliberately make it more difficult for lawful citizens to vote.

But the governor did sign the new law last summer to reduce early voting days and blunt voter registration drives.

Then he launched this massive purge of the voter rolls – hunting for suspected noncitizens. And in so doing, he’s now defying federal authorities who say you cannot conduct a purge of voter rolls so close to an election.

I'm back in PA now and royally pissed at Corbett and most of the state Assembly. The Senate isn't bad, but it hasn't been moving in the right direction. We haven't had purges (yet), but we do have a picture ID law in place now. I rebelled against it in the primary but I won't have a choice in November unless the ACLU gets the courts to do something about it. I have a picture ID. That isn't the point. It's just wrong. What the hell is the matter with my voter registration card? Everyone at the polls knows everyone who actually bothers to vote - to the point where they start flipping to the right page in the registry when you walk through the door. Our rights as voters are questionable at best now and unlikely to survive. Can you tell I'm pissed?
