Airline Offers Wealthy Passengers Luxury Suites Complete with Double Beds and Armchairs

Even when you’re in business class, long flights can get pretty uncomfortable. For some it’s the leg space, others are annoyed by noisy passengers, but now Singapore Airways offers a very simple-yet-expensive solution to any problem – luxury private suites.

That’s right, from now on, wealthy passengers flying on the company’s A380 jets will be able to relax in their very own cabins in the sky, complete with double beds and comfy Italian-stitched armchairs. No more having your legs squashed in that tiny space between chairs, or having to endure a total stranger’s snoring or loud obnoxious voice. Instead of trying to watch the in-flight movie on a tiny screen, with a headset in your ears, you can sit back and enjoy whatever film you like on your private 23-inch TV. From now on, rich business types will have their own little oasis of privacy and luxury even when they’re flying.

And just in case your very own private cabin, complete with a large double bed, reclining leather seat and window blinds isn’t enough, Singapore Airlines also offers a gourmet menu and a selection of fine wines. It all sounds like a dream, but wait till you her the price. If you want to book one of these private suites, you’ll have to fork out some serious cash. For example, a round flight from New York to Singapore costs $15,750 per person. And these luxurious cabins don’t even have their own bathrooms.

Our company uses them when we fly to Singapore. We only get Business Class though which, still is nicer than anyone else.

I already have a nice house and a couple of nice cars. I might buy a second house for winter but it would be a decidedly middle class one much like the one I have. I have no desire for Ferraris or Bentleys - can't even drive a Mustang to its limits legally or responsibly so why buy a less comfortable and reliable Italian jobby just to get more useless capability and invite envious vandalism. I wouldn't buy any fancy jewelry or designer clothes - not my thing. I don't see the point of $300 dinners when I prefer a good burger or $1000 wines when I prefer a $5 beer. I don't even hanker over audiophile gear or cutting edge 3d big screens. I'm far from a frugality purist - I'm just perfectly content living my comfortable 80th or so percentile lifestyle and have no unmet wants among most of the normal trappings of true wealth. I spend far less than I could now. More money wouldn't change what I want in almost all cases.

But given that 90 million or so post-tax Powerball win tomorrow there are two things that will forever cease instanter. I'll never hear an alarm clock and my ass will never see coach class again. This or as close to it as the airline provides would be how I'd travel. I'd drive to the big hubs to avoid non-1st class connection flights, and to be honest I'd take cruise ships more than fly if one served my destination.

To me true luxury is three things, none of them specifically material per se. The free time to do what you want, the money to pay for it, and the freedom from inconvenience while you are doing it. Things like this take the second but provide the third for those who choose to travel. It would be worth it to me.

The main Middle Eastern airlines - Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad - have been offering luxury suites on their aircraft for many years. The food, the quality of service - everything else - is about on par with what Singapore offers. Yes the seats are quite pricey in case you were wondering.

He has his money working' for him! And it is a lot of money for regular people, but pocket change for a 1%er. And cheaper than a private jet, especially for that distance.
