Thursday night Facebook asked me to "check in as safe" during "Criminal activity in Dallas"

I'm not famous or important. No one cares if I am safe or not.

Is Facebook trying to make everyone feel like they are so special that other people care if they are safe?

someone might appreciate knowing you were okay. It's a way to maintain contact in a chaotic situation. You're not obligated to participate.

Ok well how would facebook know that.

The assumption is someone on the planet would care if you are safe and it is a method to let those people know. You know a friend or spouse or parent who could see the news, know you are there, be worried, and then see you checked in as safe.
