Jeb Bushs remark that Ronald Reagan would be too moderate for todays Republican Party earned an aggressive rebuke from the gatekeeper of the anti-tax obstinacy that permeates the modern GOP.
Thats foolish, Grover Norquist, the architect of the bedrock never-raise-taxes pledge that nearly every Republican has signed, told TPM in an interview. Its stupits bizarre.
Theres a guy who watched his father throw away his presidency on a 2:1 (ratio of spending cuts to tax increases) promise, Norquist said of Bush. And he thinks hes sophisticated by saying that hed take a 10:1 promise. He doesnt understand hes just agreed to walk down the same alley his dad did with the same gang. And he thinks hes smart. You walk down that alley, you dont come out. You certainly dont come out with 2:1 or 10:1.

(13,891 posts)pardon the pun...he is anticipating a Republican Party meltdown and setting himself up to be the savior in 2016. Norquist is starting to sputter...losing his grip.

That's the first thing I thought of - except I think he's being supported and encouraged by a team of Republicans who see the writing on the wall and want to switch marketing gears. Hence, a gently, seemingly sane member of the Bush Dynasty suddenly "sees the light." I don't buy it; there are no benign members of the BFEE.

(14,549 posts)the primaries dragged on as Ron Paul got way too much of the vote in one state after another. Now Jeb is having a public spat with them. They are coming apart at the seams.

(4,452 posts)He's an extremely intelligent, self-serving, manipulative sociopath. He is a dangerous person that should be considered in the same vein as a starved, cornered wild animal. He will do anything and everything to assure his current survival without realizing that in the end it will assure his own destruction.

(15,804 posts)than any other member of his insidious family of pillagers and plunderers. His remarks are likely nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to make him more widely pallatable for 2016, and Grover Fuckwad Norquist is merely playing his part in the charade. They are banking on short memory. Reality is that this country cannot CANNOT risk another Bush in the White House. Not ever.

Stand back and watch them PROVE that there's no such thing as a zero-sum game in human relations. There is no win-lose; there is only win-win or lose-lose. They're playing lose-lose.

Sounds like he's gone undercover for the GOP. The excommunication is just the "convincing" of the slow that he's not GOP anymore. I wouldn't even think he ex GOP, the bush family are lying "evildoer's".

The Florida DLCers would roll out the Welcome mat and consider it a Political WIN.

(8,636 posts)There is almost certainly a behind-the-scenes battle for control of the GOP; but, it's far from certain who will be left standing when the smoke clears. A fratricidal battle in the GOP may be our best hope to keep control of the Senate and White House in 2012; however, don't and I repeat, don't count the Tea Party crazies out!
The most likely outcome will be, that the Teahadists will re-emerge by 2016, more likely by 2014, rebranded and with new slogans. The people behind the Tea Party are largely people who were active in the Religious Right in the Reagan years. The whacko wing of the Republican party is not going to relinquish control! We may see a brief period, after the election when the brain-free media announce that "The moderates have retaken control of the Republican party from 'the conservatives.'" The M$Media, of course, refers to the far right as 'moderates' and the absolute loonies as 'conservatives.' I think we all realize that there hasn't been any such thing as a Republican 'moderate' for more than a generation!
The Tea Party is an astroturf, Frankenstein monster created by big money types like the Koch brothers and Machiavellian strategists like Norquist and Karl Rove. If the monster meets his end in a burning windmill, well, back to the lab!

(20,317 posts)I remember reading some remarks by Helen Keller about a newspaper publisher, shortly after she started talking about political ideas he didn't like:
"At that time the compliments he paid me were so generous that I blush to remember them. But now that I have come out for socialism he reminds me and the public that I am blind and deaf and especially liable to error.
Still, I expect Jeb is reading the political winds here. Anyone who isn't a complete ideologue would have to realize that the extremist personae the GOP is wearing these days is a big political liability for someone... oh... running for the presidency.

(30,404 posts)for some "trumped up reason" ~ who would be the nominee for the Rethugs?
I just have this feeling that Jeb can see 2012 in his mirror.
Could he be put in place during their convention or would it be Rick S. ?
