DoJ to FL: "Please immediately cease this unlawful conduct."

http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/06/11/497934/breaking-department-of-justice-sues-florida-over-voter-purge/

The U.S. Justice Department is suing Florida after the state disregarded the federal government’s request to suspend its voter purge campaign. In a letter to the Florida Secretary of State, Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez argues that Florida is violating the National Voter Registration Act and the Voting Rights Act. “Please immediately cease this unlawful conduct,” Perez writes.

Holder needs to actually get his hands dirty on this.

Still trying to figure out which is more important; DoJ pursuing this Florida criminality (and affront to Democracy), or the intell leaks. Me-thinks this is what Holder et al need to be focused on / whuppin a** on.

the lawsuit says that and more.

Did anyone on this thread even bother to read the letter? All the bloviating over the word 'please' , and not one word about this sentence:

"Because the State has demonstrated its unwillingness to comply with these requirements, I have authorized the initiation of an enforcement action against Florida in federal court."

That's the one that says 'cut it the fuck out.' I don't know if you realize it, but the state of the law (Voting Rights Act) isn't some blunt instrument. The Justice Dept. needs a court to order Florida to stop their purge. The letter is a direct and complete rebuke of Scott's lame argument. The court filing is the (court-tested) hammer of the federal government coming down under the reliable provisions of the Voting Rights Act.

Unfortunately the next one won't be quite so "Mason-Dixon" defined. I fear the end of the union is within sight. Keep in mind that the Constitution wasn't intended to last more than about two decades. It's seriously weird that it has survived this long, but it is also being skirted on all sides by whatever means are available. Remember something called the "Fourth Amendment"? We kissed that good-bye a long time ago. The USSC was never meant to be a partisan body but that's all it is now. Our judicial system is far beyond broken. PA is among the new "photo ID" states. I rebelled in the primary (legally) but won't have the right to do so in November unless the courts do something. I'm not optimistic about the chances of that. That's where Florida is as well. Scott knows the courts are unlikely to rule on anything before November and will do whatever he can to disenfranchise likely Democratic voters. What "enforcement" is available now that wasn't there twelve years ago?
