Carrie Underwood Speaks Out For Gay Marriage, Cites Christian Faith As Influencing Her Liberal Views

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/11/carrie-underwood-gay-marriage-interview_n_1587250.html?ref=mostpopular

Add Carrie Underwood to the list of stars who've come out in support of marriage equality.

The country songstress, who was raised Baptist, spoke at length about the topic in an interview with The Independent, noting that her Christian upbringing is at the core of her attitude toward same-sex marriage.

"As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry," Underwood is quoted as saying. "I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."

The British publication also notes that while the 29-year-old Underwood was raised Baptist, she now attends a nondenominational "gay friendly" Christian church with her husband, pro hockey player Mike Fisher.

"Above all, God wanted us to love others," she noted. "It's not about setting rules, or [saying], 'Everyone has to be like me.' No. We're all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”

Color me surprised. I'm guessing this isn't going to sit well with many of her country music fans. But it's good to see her in support of Marriage Equality!

people of faith. My thinking is there won't be a big backlash. There will be some who will complain, but there are a lot of people who know someone who is gay and that has changed their thinking. Plus I think her audience is younger anyway.

These fans can be hardcore on their favorites and pretty unforgiving when they don't toe the line. But let's hope there is a little more leeway when it's talking out against bigotry as oppose to talking out against a war.

I supported the Dixie Chicks 100% when they talked out against Bush and the War, but they did do it at a time when 9/11 was only a few years back and the country was hungry for revenge against those who did it. But supporting Marriage Equality is something that is just the right thing to do and has no out-lying factors like 9/11. If Country fans do turn their back on Carrie Underwood for speaking her mind out about marriage equality then it just shows that these fans are nothing more than a bunch of hateful bigoted narrow-minded people.

This is the faith I try to practice.

Wife and I have been fans of her since American Idol so this is good news to hear about her. If you're going on a road trip through the south - Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas areas - put on her first album and just country/pop out!

For one thing, she is really intelligent--salutatorian of her high school class. And her career moves have been so smart. She would not have done this without taking the pulse of her fans, I feel. She has never cultivated the Christian right with her music. For one thing, her songs aren't exactly the type the Christian music followers would like anyway. They are way less "wholesome" than the Dixie Chicks songs. She is truly the female version of some of the rough "guy songs" in country music. Some people would prefer that the females in country music sing the more subserviant type songs, and she doesn't. There are a lot of people that prefer Miranda Lambert, for instance, because she is more traditional female country.

And what a fabulous voice!

All the sermons I heard as a kid, and especially all the reading I did in the New Testament, made me feel I should be more accepting and tolerant of differences - not less.

I don't know why most people seem to go in the opposite direction, but I think Carrie and I have it right.

With the whole Toby Keith 'Angry American' meme.

It was a time when many Americans were angry and afraid at the same time, and the song was used as propaganda and many of the 'meh-ruh-cuns' assumed Keith himself to be a full blown right-winger. But if they would actually review facts, they'd see that he's actually a middle grounder who supported the re-election of shrub in '04, and liked both Obama and McCain in '08.

The rest are not surprising except Kenny Chesney. He is very close to Tim McGraw.
