Dropped charge for highest ranking officer in Freddie Gray case
Baynard Woods in Baltimore
Thursday 7 July 2016 20.51 BST
The trial of the highest ranking officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray began in Baltimore Thursday with prosecutors dropping one of the charges against Lt Brian Rice.
Prosecutors wont pursue a charge of misconduct in office, which stemmed from the states theory that the arrest of Gray last April was improper. Gray died a week after that arrest, as a result of injuries he sustained while in police custody, setting off weeks of protests and unrest in the city.
Rice still faces four charges, including manslaughter and another misconduct in office charge for failing to follow general orders and hook Grays seatbelt.
In opening arguments, deputy chief states attorney Michael Schatzow focused on Rices role as the highest ranking officer who had the authority to order the other officers to do things, such as hook Grays seatbelt or take him to the hospital.
