Texas proposes strict new rules for disposal of aborted fetal tissue
AUSTIN, TEXAS | BY JON HERSKOVITZ
Texas is proposing new regulations for abortion providers that would require them to dispose of aborted fetal tissue either through burial or cremation, saying the measures are intended to preserve human dignity.
Abortion rights groups contend the regulations could help deter abortions in the socially conservative state. They would force providers to seek disposal through crematoriums or funeral homes, and those business could face a backlash if they are seen as being aligned with abortion providers
The regulations were entered into the July 1 Texas Register and could take effect as early as September. They come after the state was handed a stinging defeat by the U.S. Supreme Court last month when it struck down the state's restrictions on abortion clinics that led many to cease operations.
"The Health and Human Services Commission developed new rules to ensure Texas law maintains the highest standards of human dignity," said Bryan Black, a spokesman for the commission.

The Texas limitations would be far more stringent than regulations in almost every other state, which allow aborted fetal tissue be disposed of in a similar fashion to human tissue, according to the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion rights group whose data is used by both sides in the debate.

(1,233 posts)How much more taxpayer money is Texas willing to spend on this ridiculous campaign to deprive women of their right to an abortion?
Do these people even have a clue as to what they are talking about? Have they considered, for instance, that a fetus at ten weeks gestation is about an inch and a half long? They want something smaller than a cocktail shrimp to have a decent burial?
And what about miscarriages? Will women who have early pregnancy losses be required to preserve the clump of tissue expelled from their bodies and make funeral arrangements?
SMH. This is beyond ridiculous.

(14,857 posts)A fetus is a fetus. If one deserves burial or cremation to preserve its dignity, then all of them deserve it, don't they?

(224 posts)By forcing her to have to setup arrangements to have her aborted fetus buried by going through the process of a normal burial. Not to mention this would expose a woman to having the private details of a medical procedure becoming public, since most funeral homes publish burial and cremation records in the paper. Such lack of empathy from the conservatives.

Do they not understand that a small matchbox would work for most abortions, and that with early term abortions and miscarriages, you may not be able to collect it? I saw the conceptus from my miscarriage on toilet tissue.
