SNIP............

Investigators said 62-year-old William Bruce Ray was standing near a road Tuesday in Wake County when a passing deputy spotted him pointing the shotgun at passing motorists, reported WRAL-TV.

..........

Deputy D.R. Farmer stopped to question Ray, who became belligerent and pointed the shotgun at him.

Farmer grabbed the barrel and pushed back Ray, who then said, “I got something for you,” and reached into his pocket for a .22-caliber pistol — which the deputy knocked away.

The handgun fired as Farmer pushed it away, but the bullet did not strike anyone.

one of the primary factors, if not THE primary factor in most of these police killings of black men, but I would like to see statistics on rural vs. urban police killings. How often do altercations with LEOs end in a police killing in rural areas compared to urban areas?

There is the fact that rural police are more likely to know the other person who they've come to arrest, but I'm thinking that there just might be a different sort of mentality regarding police and public relations and attitudes. Could be worth looking into.

Exactly what I was thinking...

I'm betting if it were in a rural area and it was a person of color, it would be the same outcome as above.

9. But haven't most of the shootings of POC seem to be rural areas though

or at least suburban areas. Baton Rouge (rural area), Minnesota (rural/suburban area), Ferguson (Suburb of St. Louis). The only ones that immediately pop to mind as having been in urban areas are the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore and the death of Eric Garner in NY. I think it has to do with training, as smaller departments (suburban rural departments) tend to receive lower standards of training and also tend to hire people that not meet standards of larger more urban departments. Maybe I am wrong, but I always tend to hear reports of when officers go bad in large urban city departments they wind up applying for police jobs in smaller towns, where the hiring standards might be lower.

4. Looks like we haven't come very far from when blacks were counted as 3/5 of a person.

and you are black - dead. Dead dead dead. Cops are trained to freak out at the mere sight of an unarmed-armed black man. It is one of the most shameful things I've ever seen in our culture.

We are trained at a young age to be scared of black men! Foxnews and their fake "war on cops" drives this home.

I don't know the man's backstory.

But unfortunately there aren't many career opportunities for people with criminal convictions. So if a person has sold drugs as a stupid kid and wants to earn an honest living later, one of the few ways is to sell stuff like CDs or cigarettes or whatever. Here in DC we have people selling bottled water, scented oils, laundry detergent, all kinds of stuff. The Washington Post did a story on them as reformed drug dealers trying to live a good life with the only work available to them.

and assured me that race doesn't exist. It's all in our heads. We're overly sensitive and need to get over ourselves. Everything is just peachy.

Those DUers probably don't look like the people being killed.
