IIRC, a mid-level aide in the Nixon administration was testifying before The Irwin Committee. During the course of some routine questioning by one of the committee counsel, he said "everything in the Oval is taped".
It was televised and I still remember seeing eyeballs pop out of their sockets. WTF??? You mean there are tapes of all these conversations ????
Republicans continue to hope for their Butterfield moment...the point where some low level nobody "spills the beans". And they're not going to stop committees and questioning until they find something that sticks. Which means they aint' going to stop this shit no matter how much it wastes the country's time and money.

(5,737 posts)Or so Ryan and company want to think. More appearances in front of that committee by more people. The GOP can't let it go.

(10,857 posts)Republicans know that their target audience doesn't know what to think until someone tells them what to think. So they forge ahead with investigative investigations of investigations and then send some shill out to Fox News to say, "I think something will come of this."
Then they all repeat that toss-off line in their little circle-jerks, and eventually become outraged when it doesn't happen, and claim the game is rigged because they seent it on Fox News.
It doesn't work with informed people or people of conscience, or actual Christians, for that matter. But over half of the Republican voter base is none of those things.
