An irate, gun-wielding man was swearing at cops and they spent 40 minutes talking him down.

He was white.

An irate gun-wielding man pointed his gun at cops and at children. The cops spent an hour trying to talk him down. When this gun-wielding irate man rushed the cops, they fired precisely ONE bullet at him, into his stomach, and incapacitated him. He surrendered and was arrested.

An irate, drunk man threatened people with his gun in a road-rage incident. When the cops surrounded him, he refused to exit his car and the cops dragged him out from there instead of shooting him.

A man fired at cops with a BB-gun from his window. The cops arrested him instead of shooting him.

Two drunk guys walked into a Walmart and started shooting with BB-guns and joked about shooting up the place. The cops arrested them instead of shooting them.

A man drove his car into a ditch. When the cops arrived, he pointed his gun at them. The cops tried to talk him down and eventually dragged him out of his car instead of shooting him.

He was white.

A woman was going on a shooting-rampage, shooting at cars, wearing body-armour, pointing her gun at cops. Instead of shooting her, the cops got into a car-chase with her and she was eventually arrested unharmed.

She was white.

A mentally disturbed, armed man barricaded himself into his appartment after threatening firefighters. After several hours of siege, he was eventually arrested unharmed.

that this was a random, statistically relevant sample.

Otherwise I could probably take the time and produce the reverse: white unarmed men killed by cops and black men who walked to the police car or ambulance on their own.

It's not the anecdotes that matter, it's the data. It's sketchy, but consistent and therefore usable. And we can have thousands killed each year in the US but what produces protests are 70-80 statistically significant excess deaths, controlling for population by race (black/white) and for age/sex ... Then again, perhaps that number isn't unexpected if we include additional controls or a different type of statistics. We can have a population terrified because of a 0.0002% increased chance of something happening to a particular kind of person in the US per year. It's certainly higher for my young black male neighbor than for the old white male me, but the risk of being hit by lightning dwarfs both risks.

We see what we see. We assume what we don't see doesn't exist, but it's there and has to be accounted for, even if it spoils the purity of the cause and outrage and complicates things.
