This sort of Orwellian rabbit hole is how a leftist protest song got bastardized into a nationalistic anthem.

I was the lone liberal among the bunch.

they would scream out Springsteen's, "Born in the USA" knowing only the chorus.

Later when I told them the actual lyrics other than the chorus, they were all surprised and, funny enough, got pissed at me for "ruining" the song for them.

I got out of Nassau County as fast as I could.
