On Saturday, Donald Trump tweeted a meme that used dog-whistle anti-Semitism to announce that his political rival, "Crooked Hillary", had "made history." The meme Trump tweeted prominently featured the Star of David a holy symbol of the Jewish religion that Nazis attempted to pervert by forcing Jews over the age of 6 to sew it onto their clothing during Hitler's reign.
Emblazoned onto the Star of David in Trump's meme are the words "Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!" The star lies atop a giant pile of money.
On Sunday, Mic discovered that Donald Trump's Twitter wasn't the first place the meme appeared. The image was first featured on /pol/ an Internet message board for the alt-right, a digital movement of neo-Nazis, anti-Semites, and white supremacists newly emboldened by the success of Donald Trump's rhetoric as early as June 22, 2016, over a week before Donald Trump's team tweeted it.

Pass this on and use it to reply to anyone who passes along Trump's garbage.

(36,906 posts)but it is very possible that he didn't even consciously think about it when he re-tweeted. Certain antisemitic memes are so much a part of our culture that many people don't even notice them. I don't think Trump is the evil genius that so many portray him as. I think he's a narcissist who is instinctively good at PR and that he doesn't think through much of what he does and says- he just reacts. There is a good chance he just saw an anti-Hillary tweet and immediately re-tweeted it without even thinking about what it actually showed. This inability to think and consider consequences, in itself, demonstrates yet another reason why he is not competent to be President.

When I point this out on the town's FB page, and that Trump is a racist, bigoted misogynist, they reply with something to the effect of "he speaks his mind and doesn't care what anyone thinks."
Yeah, well. So does the guy who lives under the bridge and who pisses himself while shouting at cars about Jesus. Equally qualified, I'd say.
This kind of racist propaganda is right up their alley, and good luck trying to get them to see the light.

are orthodox Jews.
If Trump drafted the Tweet or if someone else did it and he knew, this would be extremely cruel to his own family as he controlled the message.

(26,877 posts)Any members of Congress that have come up in support of him will also need to go! We shouldn't forget that the Nazis also normalized hatred even before Hitler came into power. White supremacists have been emboldened by this garbage. This needs to be nipped in the bud now!

We believe in freedom of expression and in speaking truth to power, but that means little as an underlying philosophy if voices are silenced because people are afraid to speak up. In order to ensure that people feel safe expressing diverse opinions and beliefs, we do not tolerate behavior that crosses the line into abuse, including behavior that harasses, intimidates, or uses fear to silence another users voice.
Any accounts and related accounts engaging in the activities specified below may be temporarily locked and/or subject to permanent suspension.
Violent threats (direct or indirect): You may not make threats of violence or promote violence, including threatening or promoting terrorism.
Harassment: You may not incite or engage in the targeted abuse or harassment of others. Some of the factors that we may consider when evaluating abusive behavior include:
if a primary purpose of the reported account is to harass or send abusive messages to others;
if the reported behavior is one-sided or includes threats;
if the reported account is inciting others to harass another account; and
if the reported account is sending harassing messages to an account from multiple accounts.
Hateful conduct: You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. We also do not allow accounts whose primary purpose is inciting harm towards others on the basis of these categories.

Or do we devolve back to dogwhistling?
The way he "solved" the problem is, he took away the blood red star, and replaced it with a blood red circle.
Like that makes it all better.
It's just so pathetically hateful.

(53,521 posts)They are a good example of how the anti-moderation philosophy of economically privileged white male techie libertarianism leads to sites being taken over by the worst elements of humanity. On Reddit too, the site admins are delusional idiots who think it is OK to give racists and fascists a megaphone to propagandize and recruit new followers because it's "free speech".
I miss the golden age of internet message boards in the early 00s when the internet was filled with well-moderated message boards that kept out the bigots, trolls, and shit-posters.

(17,199 posts)Donald Trump finally has a response to the controversy of his Star of David tweet: Its your mistake, not mine. Two days after Trump tweeted and swiftly deleted a Hillary Clinton attack ad featuring a Star of David over a pile of money, the monster mogul on Monday fell back on the ridiculous claim that the image shows a Sheriffs Star.
Dishonest media is trying their absolute best to depict a star in a tweet as the Star of David rather than a Sheriff's Star, or plain star! he tweeted in the morning. He recycled the sheriffs badge excuse after several Trump surrogates including his fired campaign manager Corey Lewandowski tried it out in the media over the weekend.
But Trumps tweet failed to cover any of the ethical or logical gaps from his controversial tweet. For one thing, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee didnt explain how the image made its way from a neo-Nazi message board to his 9.4 million Twitter followers.
He offered no explanation for why he deleted the original tweet within minutes, then replaced it with an identical image, featuring a circle poorly Photoshopped over the Star of David.

Paul Ryan Denounces Donald Trump's Use of 'Anti-Semitic' Hillary Clinton Image
Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan has denounced a recent Donald Trump tweet featuring Hillary Clinton and a six-pointed star, calling the image anti-Semitic.
The image, which Trump tweeted on July 2, shows Hillary Clinton, along with the words most corrupt candidate ever emblazoned on a Star of David and a pile of $100 bills in the background. He posted the image with the words, Crooked Hillary Makes History!
In an interview with Wisconsin radio host Charlie Sykes on Tuesday, Ryan was asked about Trumps use of the image. He replied, anti-Semitic imagestheyve got no place in a presidential campaign. Candidates should know that. The tweet has been deleted and I dont know how long he put this up there. Obviously theyve got to fix that.
Ryan also said that Trump needs to clean this up.
