BREAKING -Rick Scott suing Homeland Security to get the data base

so he can purge the voters' list.
http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/06/11/2844300/florida-sues-department-of-homeland.html
<snip>
The governor and the secretary of state say the Department of Homeland Security has refused to give the state a list of immigrants who have become citizens so the state can update its list to purge non-citizens from voter rolls.

Gov. Rick Scott’s top elections official sued the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Monday, accusing the agency of unlawful “recalcitrance” for refusing Florida access to a database that could help the state spot and remove noncitizens from the voter rolls.

“We have a right to this database,” Scott said Monday on Fox News’ Your World Cavuto show. “It’s supposed to be used for voting registration. I look forward to them giving us the database but, again, we don’t have a choice but to sue them this afternoon.”

DHS has refused to comment or explain why it won’t give Florida access to the database.

Although it'd probably be damn near impossible since the GOP doesn't believe in logic.

since the purge is being performed illegally, then the court will never rule in Florida's favor.

Hopefully the suit will be thrown out with no merit.

The DOJ needs to crack down on these crackpots-- they're the minority but they have influential, scary wingnuts backing them. If I live to be 1000, I'll never figure out why they actively and unapologetically enjoy hurting people. sick sick sick

I think someone is giving him advice.

Probably an old Federalist Lawyer type. Like the kind who wanted to rewrite the constitution to give the power of elections over to the Florida legislature.

It is a national database of citizens. Apparently the use of the data is restricted as Scott is not the only repug governor that has been turned down. Since several of them have been asking, somebody somewhere probably suggested it would be a good idea. ALEC comes to mind, as alot of the rest of the voter suppression stuff has come from this source. Federalist Society lawyers probably do hang out at ALEC meetings.

I stand by my impression that Scott will do stuff like this on a whim, it does not need to make sense or solve any real problem. He likes stirring things up, it is his hobby.

Wasn't his process but it was too close to an election. I heard that voter lists can't be purged within 90 days of an election, that they have one in August. Then there will be another one within 90 again, the national election. If the list were given today it would be at least 180 days old before it could legally used and potentially out of date.
