Get used to it, ya limey bastids! The Premier League will be downgraded to the Second Run League, and the Champions League will now be called the Relegation League.

Takk fyrir Island. Thank you Iceland. Thank you for Gudmundur Benediktssons epic falsetto commentary, for bringing one-tenth of the population to France to take part in this odyssey, for making Cristiano Ronaldo uppity and reminding the rest of us of the essential valour of the little guys right to his aspirations, for competing so fearlessly to defeat England, for blowing our minds. Thank you for your co-managers other job in dentistry, your class and determination in searching for a first win at a major finals, your exemplary coaching system, your comradeship within the team, your inspired hothousing of young talent in a weather-beaten place. Thank you for showing us imaginative ways of doing things can bring extraordinary achievements.
You can go out of Europe: Iceland commentator savours win over England

The summoning of trolls, smiting and human/monster hybrids have been fun but extraneous as these weeks in France have turned out to be a saga worthy of any tales of old. Icelands players, coaches and supporters have etched a modern sporting myth. Iceland did not even play a game on grass until the 1950s. Before that football took place on gravel formed of crushed lava. Until the 1990s it was an amateur game. Like all the best surprises, all this will not be forgotten.
It is a huge happiness, said Lars Lagerback. There are not many occasions you have these feelings. They do not want it to end and are itching to prepare for France, up next. It is an even bigger game, said Lagerback. We will see if we will improve a bit when we come to Paris.

Remember a lot of English pension funds blew up in those banks but Iceland stood up to the bullies everywhere

(23,362 posts)No golfer got assassinated for sinking his ball into the wrong hole.
If a golfer falls down, he gets up. There is no operatic death scene that lasts until an official makes a ruling.
Soccer has nationalistic hooligan drunk groups of fans who get into brawls. Golf has a quiet clap.
USGA officials are far less entertaining than FIFA officials.

(13,869 posts)England v Iceland Euro 2016 reaction: Roy Hodgson resigns as manager after humiliating exit to Iceland
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/06/27/england-vs-iceland-euro-2016-live/
Manager Roy Hodgson resigned immediately after the match, saying he was sorry that his four year tenure had to end like this but that "these things happen".
(snip)
Visibly rattled, England struggled to get into any sort of rhythm afterwards and long shot after long shot made things simple for the Iceland defence. It got far worse for Roy Hodgson's team when Kolbeinn Sigthorsson forced a shot past Joe Hart from the edge of the area, the England keeper making a terrible error and allowing the ball to slip through his grasp and into the back of the net.
Iceland didn't struggle for the rest of the game and England rarely tested them.

(1,089 posts)and we watched the match in a pub last night. I've never seen a group of people so utterly apoplectic. It was surreal. England scored very early in the match on a penalty and it seemed as though they were on their way. Then Iceland equalized within about two minutes and took the lead on a goal about 12 minutes later and never looked back. It was an upset, but honestly Iceland far outplayed England. It was something I won't soon forget, seeing that all unfold here in London. Before we even got back to our hotel, news was out that Robson had resigned.

We were quietly rooting for the upset just because it was compelling to watch a country of 330,000 people take it right to one of the self-proclaimed world football powers. The anger and embarrassment was palpable in the crowd.
One day England will look at the statistical facts re their football - they've been ordinary for decades.
