General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow the NRA keeps their members paranoid! And how people way overestimate the need for guns.
Lets be honest, the NRA members are gullible. See the cover from their monthly magazine below. They are saying soon Obama will start collecting your GUNS! Now, if the Onion ran this story we would think it was over the top, but the NRA members believe it.
Also, see two more images below where the NRA says you basically need to hide guns throughout the house for quick access when the intruders come to kill you and your family. And I bet many NRA members have many throughout their homes.
And what is really amazing is how few NYPD police officers fire their guns a year. From the 2013 annual report:
from a Department of approximately 35,000 officers, 55 officers were involved in 40 incidents of intentional firearms discharges during an adversarial conflict, with 17 subjects injured and eight killed.
So, 35,000 police officers who are on the streets, only 55 fired their weapon. The average citizen has a lot less of a chance of needing a gun than a NYPD police officer. (link below to yearly report). So in a working span of 30 years, only 1,600 NYPD officers will use their gun out of 35,000. 96% of officers will never fire their weapon in their lifetime.
But the NRA can keep these uninformed gun owners paranoid. And they have Ted Nugent on their board of directors. How can anyone think they are legit when Nugent is a representative for your organization?
But they control the gun debate by keeping people scared. And it works on gullible citizens..
Amazing how stupid some people are.

(19,114 posts)IMO, the majority of gun nuts lack experience dealing with conflict, especially passionate conflict.
As someone who grew up in rougher neighborhoods and simply had no choice but to fight in defense of myself on occasion, I can honestly say that there has been no situation I have ever been threatened in that a gun would have not made much worse. Been mugged, been jumped, been assaulted, not once would a gun have made it better. In fact I would have ended up shooting someone unnecessarily is the more likely outcome had I carried a weapon my whole life.
Seldom will you see situations where a gun calms things down. It escalates things 9 out of 10 times. That's just something you need experience with to know.

"Richard Feldman, former NRA regional political director and lobbyist for the firearm industry, exposes the NRA as a cynical, mercenary political cult obsessed with wielding power while exploiting members' fear in order to maximize contributions."
