That woman, Rebecca Landis Hayes, took to Facebook to respond to the anonymous note writer:
To the person who left this note on my windshield today at the Coddle Creek Harris Teeter in Concord, NC:
I know I parked in one of the Veteran Parking spaces today, it was hot. I had been in and out of my car several times already this afternoon, and I was only going to be a minute. Besides, the parking lot was full, so I just did it. It was the first time, and I wont do it again. Im sorry
Im sorry that you cant see my eight years of service in the United Sates Navy. Im sorry that your narrow misogynistic world view cant conceive of the fact that there are female Veterans. Im sorry that I have to explain myself to people like you. Mostly, Im sorry that we didnt get a chance to have this conversation face to face, and that you didnt have the integrity and intestinal fortitude to identify yourself, qualities the military emphasizes.
Which leads to one question, I served, did you?

(6,400 posts)Considering the hardships that some veterans have, a closer parking space can make all the difference in making their day easier.

(31,011 posts)I have a veteran's license plate on my beater. Once a man came up to me and said, "What branch did your husband serve in?"
"Air Force (two beats here) just like me."
"Oh."
"Yeah and I out rank him."
(Hand salute to Navy. Nice shooting, Sailor)

My wife and I parked in one of the Veterans Only spots at the local Harris Teeter...didn't think anything about it. But when I came out there was a gentlemen easily 70-80 in the Veteran's spot next to mine on a scooter struggling to lift onto the back of his vehicle. I assisted him, left and then vowed to never again use one of those Veteran's Only parking spots again out of respect for those veterans who really need them. Quite frankly I felt like I was in the Seinfeld episode about the handicapped parking space.
I also think this goes in the same category of all of the slightly overweight individuals who shamelessly use the Handicapped parking spaces. Human nature dictates that 20% of these individuals are in chronic pain but the other 80% are frauds. You couldn't have got away with this in the 1970-80s when all of the Vietnam Vets were in their angry prime.
